Lately I have been looking for a lighter, thinner carry knife for my EDC; which is normally a Spyderco Military or a ZT Mudd for my "around the farm" chores. I stumbled on the SOG Slim Jim XL while looking at my local feed store/gunshop/hardware store and was immediately reminded of the old Mercator knives of my youth, so it came home with me last Saturday.
For the princely sum of $40 OTD I do believe I got a winner. Since Saturday the SJ has- opened feed bags, stripped wire for outlets, cut rope and baling twine, lanced a boil on my dog, skinned 2 coyotes/a rabbit/3 squirrels and then (after a very thorough cleaning/sanitizing) cut up 2 beef roasts for stew along with the veggies that go along in the stew. And i'm sure I have forgotten much more work it has performed......yep, i'm old.
All this from a $40 AUS 8 folder that weighs in at around 3oz. I'm happy and impressed, I haven't owned an AUS 8 knife in years and had forgotten how well they can perform of properly hardened and ground/sharpened. I have only had to touch up the edge twice with a Spyderco double-sided stone. It will get VERY sharp with little effort if you know what you are doing.
The knife is pleasing to the eye, being beadblasted stainless, lightwieght, super slim with a comfortable grip in my hands and sports a nice deep seat pocket clip for discrete carry in non-knife friendly environments.
Is it perfect?? NO, I don't like manual locks on knives...period. But I can live with it as a farm work knife with the above tasks in mind. It would not be on my EDC personal defense list (though I carry a gun for that anyway).
All in all, a good knife at a good price, light, thin with a very energetic assisted opening device. I would love an S30V version
