Hello, I am just wanting to get an idea of the value of this knife. I figure this is the place to go. It was my father's and I am just trying to figure out what fair price I should sell it at. This thread is not a for sale thread. Any input would be appreciated.

If it were your father's because he served in Vietnam with that group, I'd say it's priceless....

I have the same knife! It seems to have very slight scratches from (the sheath)? I keep thinking about selling it but can't bring myself to do it. I don't know how rare it is or what the demand for this knife is but it is a very solid, beautiful knife. I wouldn't sell it for less than $250. If anyone has any real info please post. I would love to know more about it. Thanks.

I have one and have contemplated trading or ever selling it off as well. As far as values one place that seems to get them and move them rather quickly is on one of AG Russels web-sited called "cutting edge.com", last time I noticed a couple on his site they went for nearly $300 and one over that amount slightly. I suppose its what the market will bear but as Luigimoto mentioned I would certainly not take less than $250which is around the original retail when they were still made in Japan so it certainly isn't gouging the serious collector. If you don't need the money now just let it sit and build some equity, my advice anyhow. Good luck and happy holidays.

Thank you all for the responses. It was my father's but he was non military. I am pretty sure he had purchased it in the late 90s I think. I have plenty of other keepsake items from him. This was one he didn't want me to touch that much considering its price point. I think the light scratches were just from it being used to open plastic packaging I think. I am glad to hear that it has at least held its value over the years. From what you guys have been saying I'm probably going to post it for sale in a couple of days at $310 shipped and insured (?) and just see what happens. Kind of off subject but I happened to see a SOG machete for like 20 bux at walmart the last time I went shopping and got a little irked to see their name posted on such an item. I know my dad had revered them as a great manufacturer. I'm not trying to start a war or anything if this is a touchy subject.

Happy Holidays and thanks again for the great posts.

Here is the deal. I have been researching these for a while...
The early SOG made S1 bowies were made with preproduction numbers on the blade...., then they made yours because yours have the CREST on the sheath which i believe is the mid 80's.. I have the same one in the white sog box like yours with the crest on the sheath.. Then SOG started making the S1C which came in the commerative wooden box.those knives had engraved numbers on the GAURD not base of the blade. They made a few thousand of the S1C... Then SOG in the mid 90's made many of just the reg S1 bowie with a sheath that said SOG on the leather . this had no engraved number... I would say dont take any less than 250 but thats a quick sale.. I think u could get 350 on a good day..

A REAL SOG BARKER MACV from vietnam is atleast 1000-1500

Thanks for all the great info dax. I guess you really know your stuff on these. Any chance you want to grow your collection anymore 8).

Hello again!! I will PM u! Its a beauty .. THe problem with the SOG S1 or any knife with LEATHER handle it does not appeal to many newbies becuase most of these VINTAGE knives handles are cracked.. I have been lazy with mine and have not treated it..

The handle on mine is perfect. How do I keep it that way? What is the best way to treat the handle? I do notice that the piece of leather holding the snap on the sheat is getting hard and brittle. What leather conditioner do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for any help. :)
