Noticed earlier this year Sog was offering it's Trident line with D-2 steel and a stronger lock-up than the older version which was Aus-8. Am considering one of these and would sure appreciate any opinions or reviews from owners that have purchased this model recently. I know the handle comes in black or olive drab with a tanto style blade version available. Thanks in advance.

Haven't messed with the Trident, but I have a few of their newer pieces and I'm pretty impressed. I think the Trident is a little bit expensive for what it is and I can't speak to the quality of their assisted open, as my newer models have all been manual, but if it's anything like the other XR models then the build quality and durability is definitely there.

I have one of these in the od color. the cutout for cord cutting is way too big and it sits right where the pocket clip ends and when putting in your pocket ya almost cut your pocket edge if you aren't looking.

the assist works fine the lock lever is a bit annoying as it sticks up but can work around it.
xr works well. best part of the knife.

all in all its an okay knife but the cord cutout size and position makes me not carry it.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Actually looking for a new EDC with some quality and in my price range. Think I saw them recently for around $95. Was packing the earlier Trident Tanto for a while. Sure are plenty to choose from and so many different steels out there. Am still leaning towards this Sog model too because of bit longer blade length of 3.75. Should serve my purposes.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger on this one. Found it for $75 online. Of course no retailers around me had em including Bass Pro. Usual price seemed to be $95-100. Give you my impression and short review when I get it probably Friday or Sat.

yeah saw them on sale round holiday time. lookin forward to your take on it. especially the cord cut out size and location and pocket clip placement.

No problem. give ya my 2 cents. Only thing I don't like might be the cord cutter slot. Never had a problem with the older Trident Tanto with the clip going in or getting hung up. Got the olive drab for a change. Not so bad being a newb as I can ask for opinions on a knife before jumping in with both feet. Hate REGRETS!

Well just received it this morning and my initial impression is very favorable. Definitely more grippy than the older Trident with better texture on handle. Blade zips out with authority too. I notice the blade coating has a duller black finish than the older model which has a rather glossy look to it. Overall has a more sturdy feel to it. Like the liners especially added to the improved version. Happy I got the OD green version. Only gripe could be the pocket clip like jbmonkey mentioned it is a bit stiffer than my old Trident. Would not say it came hair-popping sharp out of the box but the edge is fairly decent for cutting. See if I can remedy that tonight. Also gonna give it a squirt of RemOil in the joints. Looks a bit dry inside. Am not too hard on my knives so this one should make a decent EDC for me. Got mine for $75 off Smokey Mountain plus $6.00 for Fed-Ex shipping. Better than paying $100 or close to it. Thanks to all who answered my inquiry. Now to get a super edge on that D-2 steel.

glad ya like it. good initial feedback on it. thank you.

Your welcome. Glad i got the clip point for a change. Did a good job cutting open plastic wood pellet bags. LOL Really appreciate the 3.7 inch blade. Too many models out there with puny size blades.

I was gifted a new trident this week by a buddy of mine, I'm overall very impressed by the knife, although a bit big compared to what I usually carry. I took it apart for a clean and lube, this improved the initial gritty feel in the action, the centering is good, and I'm happy to see how thin the geometry of the blade is...

I've kept looking at that cutout all week... Does anyone know of a supplier of aftermarket scales for these? My thought being just having the cutout in the liners covered by a full scale. Jade green g10 would look pretty good with the red accents I think. I'd attempt the project myself, but I don't have anything to mill the hollows on the back sides for the lock to function properly...

Glad ya got one. Love the knife but hear ya on the cut-out. Guess some may use it though. Really like the ergonomics of the handle. I know Sog touting it as a rescue knife but sure appealed to me as a tactical/defense type EDC also. Nothing wrong with the speed the blade propels at!

I’ve had a desert MARPAT Trident for a few years now. I tried to love it but sadly, I can’t. There’s significant blade play and the action is horribly gritty. Granted I got it for 50 bucks on base but I’d rather spend a few bucks and get a Benchmade. When I compare it to my BM Volli which is also an assisted opener, it pales in comparison.

I have no idea what the older ones are like, and to be honest I'd have no idea what these ones in d2 were like if not for a friend giving me one. I like it, other than that cord notch...

Edit for spelling
