I had a discussion today on German knives when I pulled out my Eye Brand stockman. My co-worker thought that all pocketknives were basically made by one factory. I thought there were probably several, but there is one maker making a few different brands. I know there are a few that are made in one factory like Bulldog and Hen&Rooster. Does anyone know about other brands? It looks to me like Eye Brand and Buckmark are one in the same. Boker, Puma and Henkels seem to be separate.

JA Henckels stopped making pocket knives around 1960'ish ? Boker has made many of their knives since, also Boker makes many of the Hen & Roosters for Frost, Boker also makes a lot of contract knives reproduction Russell barlows and congress patterns. I also believe that Boker also makes some Bulldog brands but I'm not 100% sure so take that as it is, not fact.

How about some Fredrich Olbertz? Here's a stockman:

And Carl Schlieper is made in the same factory, here's a small congress;

Don't forget Hartkopf, they build an excellent knife in a small shop.

Well, Friedrich Olbertz, Carl Schlieper and Fight'n'Roosters are made by Olbertz in Solingen.

Separate cutleries for example are Otter Messer, Friedrich Hartkopf, Hubertus, Diefenthal, Böker, PUMA and some others...

It is sometimes like with GEC and its three (or even four) subbrands... ;)

In addition to Boker, I have heard that Olbertz also made Henckels pocketknives.

Mike, I can't seem to find it, you would know better, but I read that Boker used the Olbertz factory and tooling? I can't find the info, so I really don't know.

It should be written Waidmannsheil, but you are definitelly on the trail :)

For explanation: Waidmann is a hunter and the "Waidmannsheil" is spoken between hunters when one meets the other on the hunt. The other one usually replies "Waidmanns Dank" ...

JFYI ;)

Hi Humppa,

Thank you for clearing the term being used as salutation of German speaking hunters.
Anyway it does not clear who made or who is making such brand knives.

If I learned right, both writings Waidmannsheil AND Weidmannsheil are quite common in Germany and Austria. Maybe you can advise.
And I believe that both (slightly) different terms were registered as brandnames by Solingen cutlers.

Looking at the way the scales are ground by the bolsters. my Eye brand stockman has the same similarities.

I don't know about the older ones; but in the last 20 years...

Boker made at least their own, all Henckels I have seen, and many Hen/Rooster.

Olbertz made at least their own, all Bulldogs (except GEC's and a couple by Queen), all Eye Brand, all Fight'n Rooster (except a couple Japanese), all Weidmannsheil, and several Hen/Rooster.

Now days, I'm not sure Olbertz makes anything - but if they do make anything, they do it very slowly. Boker may make a few slipjoints, but seem content having them sourced elsewhere.

There is Schmidt & Ziegler who also used the El Toro marking and had a running bull for their mark. I do not know if they had their own factory or contracted them out to one of the others.

Thanks Mike. Buckcreek was another one I was thinking of that was similar to Eye Brand
