If you cut open boxes. envelopes, etc. with tape or adhesive on them you know what a pain it is to get that sticky stuff off. Try Rem Oil. Takes it right off.

Or a little dab of Breakfree. . .will do ya.

Or

Maybe even a little paint thinner. . .can handle this little task.

:D

lighter fluid works very well and evaporates quickly w/o leaving residue like WD40 (which may or may not be a good thing).

Gum and Tar remover (automotive department). Sheesh, this could be a song "Fifty Ways to Clean Your Al Mar.

At any given time I have 2-3 cans of brake parts cleaner around the house. It's about $3 a can, lasts forever and cleans most things off of steel better than anything I've found.

If you're worried about getting it in the action of a knife just spray it ona rag and wipe. It dries in seconds an leaves almost 0 residue. The duct tape of cleaning chemicals :)

Takes a little longer but I actually clean mine with hot water and some dishwashing liquid. Sometimes I'll give it a good Flitzing afterwards.

Avon Skin-So-Soft will get any of that sticky stuff and a lot else off - smells good & good for hands!

Never-Dull works great too! (Auto stores or knife shops)

Pledge or Endust have worked well for me. I dont know if it will tarnish 5160 or other high carbon steels, but they leave my ATS34 on my Benchmade shiny and with a little coat of wax of some sort.

As you can see, anything with a solvent base in it works. However, if you use something like pure acetone (as opposed to WD-40 or another oil) on a carbon steel blade, you should protect it afterward with some lubricant. The solvent will strip any protective finish you may of had on it prior to cleaning and it will rust easily.

cpirtle beat me to it. Brake cleaner works wonders! I think it may eat phenolic handle materials tho, so be careful... I just wipe the blade with the brake cleaner & coat w/ breakfree.
