Hey people! Here's my problem, I'm visiting Spain soon and I'm going to be visiting Toledo. I am aware that Toledo Steel Swords are well know and I'd love to get one while I'm there. EXCEPT, I have limited knowledge of European swords and my spanish is... well... I can speak it to an extent but my sword lingo is lacking.

Any advise, info, whatever, would help! Thanks

My advice:

Save your money. 99% of the stuff you will find in Toledo is decorative junk designed to be sold to tourists who know that Toledo swords are well known and not much else. There was one outfit that was still making real swords there (the name escapes me at the moment) but their stuff appeared to be rather overpriced for what it was. I'm afraid that the days of fabulous Toledo swords are long since over.

That sums it up rather well.

You know, I had a strong feeling that's how it would be. I just wanted to know if there was anyway of weeding out that cheap crap. I mean, I'm no fool, if the handle is plastic glued onto an aluminum sword, I'm not getting it. But if there really is nothing there I won't spend the cash.

Though, its sad to know that there are only tourist traps left there. The way I see it, I'll do what I always do to look for nice knives: Antique Stores!

If you do remember that name, Triton, just throw it here or in my inbox

I was in Toledo 3 weeks ago, and I can attest to the abundance of tourist junk. I was with group so I couldn't spend lots of time really searching for better steel, so perhaps you'll do better.

I can tell you this, beyond the knives, it's a beautiful city and you'll have an awesome time. Bring the camera! Here's a few crappy cell phone pics to wet your appettite:

Enjoy and stay safe!

Fantastic! Thanks to both of you! Horseclover, I'm glad you mentioned a shop. I'll defiantly keep my eye out. Oh, and Xaman, I'm also doing a kind of group activity and that shop's case looks familiar. I think I'm going to be stopping by there.

Appreciate the help, I'd love more! Thanks!

Ahh that was the one. Thanks Glen. The prices are better then I remember but the swords look worse...

Too true. Kind of a step below what was the Oscar Kolombatovitch swords. There is another source I was meaning to look for again and it was the parent company that was working with Oscar. Juan Perez had the skinny on that.

I'm pretty sure I there was also a discussion somewhere on some more background for the link/maker mentioned above. That in regard to there was a tourist trade grade but also "good/better stuff" to be had there and that may have been period or better reproductions. It may have been yet another shop.

Cheers

GC
