Some praise for the Rambler

I've been carrying the Rambler around for some weeks now. Could it be the best of the small SAK's? I leave that question open for someone else to answer. What I do know, is that I like it a lot. The 58mm frame in general has proven to be very useful to me. In fact, for a sole EDC knife in suburbia, a 58mm SAK is perfect. And added bonus points for the fact that I don't get 'the looks' from fellow commuters when I pull my Rambler out while riding on the subway. Has it replaced my other SAK's? Not entirely, but I could see that happen too in the future. So in all, I love my Rambler.

I have never owned or handled a rambler. It looks like a great little knife. I just got another vic classic sd yesterday after loosing my last on a year ago. I forgot just how handy one is on the keys.

Never had a SAK Rambler (but I did have a couple Rambler automobiles over the years. Great dependable cars) My experience with the 58MM SAK is limited to the SD Classic, Signature, and Mini Champ. I think I like the Mini Champ best of the three.

I prefer the pen and lite on my 58mm when on the keychain and have a Midnight Manager on there now. Makes the perfect backup to almost any other carry…and completely frees me up to use SAKs without plus scales wether cellidor or alox. Same stainless tools as the Rambler…just the different scale options.

I used to keep a Signature Lite with the keys, but the blade opens toward the key ring side. And using it always feels awkward if not downright stupid.

This thread has me considering a Rambler now for my tv table knife. Right now that role is assumed by a total piece of junk Chinese OTF that can’t even open an envelope easily, and a SAK knock-off from my pool supply place (one step down from a gas station special, I think) that looks kinda cool but doesn’t cut worth a crap. Forget that I have a half dozen other perfectly capable SAKs up in the knife drawer - this feels like as good an excuse as any to add one more to the collection.

You don't need an excuse to add a Rambler to the collection. I have 3. It is the perfect 58mm SAK. The knife and scissors both open to the opposite side of where the key ring is. The file faces away from the tool next to it, so it's impossible to scratch it (yes, this can actually happen with some models). The knife sits right next to the wire notch on the combo tool where it should be. Oh and the magnetic phillips tip... damn is it ever good. It is an impressively capable phillips driver.

Rambler and Alox Mini Champ are my two favorite smalls. Rambler because it makes the most sense, and the Alox MC because I love Alox. I’d hate to be forced to pick one, it’d be a matter of a coin toss.

Victorinox should just make Alox Ramblers already.

The Rambler is fantastic! I gave mine to my wife when I bought a Minichamp. The Rambler is probably the more practical of the two and I've thought about getting another one. I do like having the emergency pen and some of the extra tools on the Minichamp, though.

I keep a SAK on my TV table so often that I've thought of just leaving one there, my Tinker, maybe. It's smaller than the ones I normally like to carry on me (Super Tinker, Camper).

They should make a model called the Thinker.

Throw those crappy knives away! I have a Classic & a Climber on my living room sideboard which cover 99% of all my lounging needs. If I need a narrow #0 Phillips I take the Rambler off my keyring.

Yeah, one got thrown back in the drawer after about a half hour of sharpening yielded … nothing. The other is a small and cheap (I mean CHEAP) Chinese OTF that I think I could put a better edge on a tin can lid. In fact I think a lid comes right off the can sharper than this garbage. But it’s great for fidgeting, so it got a stay of execution. The tiny little Rambler is here in its tiny little pouch now, ready to do whatever work I need it to do. I wish Vic made a mid-size with just those exact same tools - it would be perfect. I wonder if Spikediesel Spikediesel could conjure up such a creature…

Edit: Oh how I love this place. Just when I though I had run out of reasons to need another knife, I pop into this forum. I just ordered a black Alox Cadet for the tv table. It and the Rambler should be able to handle any emergencies that come up on my couch.
