So how does one go about @tting someone. Not being a twitter or other social media user this eludes me. Can it be done from a lap top?

Start typing @name and after the first few characters are input a drop down will show up and you can select the name from the list if there are multiple. Sometimes this takes a moment to show up or there are no names starting with those characters.

Otherwise if you know how to spell it just @name

You can change preferences at the link there.

I think there has been times that it hasn't worked in the past but it is working 99.9% of the time. It may not work on some parts of the forum but I'm not sure.
 
I have all of them turned on, so that isn't the issue and I have previously gotten alerts when mentioned.
