Does anyone have a service they recommend for hardening water and oil quenching steels? I had one, but they seem to have moved or gone out of business. I have a kitchen knife about 50% ground from 1095 that I wanted to send. The guy on the phone said they did a bright treatment, in vacuum ovens, and for steels like 1095 they used a marquench to minimize warping. The minimum was $50, but the customer was willing to pay for it. First knife someone was willing to pay for, so I dont want to try it myself w/ a torch or anything.

So does this mean I'm on my own if I want to heat treat oil quenching or water quenching steels? No wonder the air quenching steels are so popular.

Where do you live and what kind of steel and how big of knives do you want to HT. If there is a smith nearby with a oven he may well help you out. I have an oven and would do it for a reasonable amount. A couple would be free if you stopped by on an open weekend and shot the breeze a bit.. I think others would do the same if close by.

Thanks for the offer. I know of one maker near by, but havent been able to get in contact yet. There is a blacksmith north of here in Asheville, NC, but I have no idea how to contact him. I heard of him from my brother, but have never met him.

If they are now doing hardening oil and water quenching steels, thats good news. Last time I looked at their website, it said air hardening steels only for heat treating.

me2, I am about 20 mins. west of Asheville. If you want to come over sometime, we can do some heat treating. Bill

I was looking to the thread and saw that there are a couple people who do heat treating in Nc. Does anyone know of a heat treating place/person in Nj. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The original company that I was looking at was Heinzelman Heat Treating in New Jersey. Now their website is blank and the phone number is not in service anymore. If you're in NJ maybe you could find out more, like if they've gone toes up, or just changed locations and are having setup time for the computers. They seemed to have been around a long time, so it seems unlikely they just went belly up all of a sudden.

Wiggins, I'm in the Spartanburg/Greenville area, but visit Asheville regularly. After the upcoming holiday, I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the offer.
