What are the advantages of the jackboot over a lace up boot? Disadvantages?

Where can you find Soviet surplus?

From hunting with both, jackboots are more of a pain to put on/take off, fit less comfortably and are more clumsy when walking/running. Their big advantage is the water proofness and the height to which they are waterproof.

Lace-up boots are more comfortable, easier to take on/off, and you can run in them.

Never tried the Soviet boots, but the Combat Leathers I was issued are nicer than any jackboot IMO.

They didn't look overly practical. I couldn't figure out why the Warsaw Pact countries used to favor them. Maybe laces freeze too easy in the RUssian cold?

Stormbringer,
Jackboots were not issued in all countries of the Warsaw Pact. At least Hungary, Poland and Czhechoslovakia issued lace boots to most of the troops. As for the USSR, it might be different.
I haven't had the 'fortune' to wear jackboots

but based on what I have seen I would take a lace boot over them any time.
They do not support the ankle and since they still have stitches, waterproofness still depends on costruction and treatment.
During WWII, when jackboots were issued in different armies, the quality of the boots very much varied depending on country of origin and whether they were issued to officers or regular troops. Since then, most countries switched to lace boots for good.
Just my two cents.

According to my Andrei Suvorov (the guy who wrote 'Spetznas'), the Soviets like to keep things cheap and simple for their troops. Jack boots certainly are cheaper.
