Got this Spartan blades fighting knife today. It is made for them by Kabar. I am really impressed with it. I have 4 of the other spartan blades knives but they were all very expensive. This one was under 130 dollars. I am showing a picture comparing it to a couple of my other iconic kabars. The spartan is in the middle. I watched a you tube video reviewing it a couple days ago and the man said the military should consider replacing the kabar fighting knife that had been in service for ever with this one. I tend to agree with him.View attachment 2204462View attachment 2204463

Is 1095 really the best choice for general military use in this day and age? Not that I don't like 1095 for personal use, but surely there are price-competitive stainless options. Soldiers shouldn't have to worry about their knife rusting in the field. (And cheap coatings don't last forever and may not be food-compatible.) 🤷‍♂️

You make a good point. I personally prefer stainless and most of my collection are. But I read where the first kabars were shipped to the military in I believe Jan. 1943. Having spent 4 years in the army in the 60's coming to the conclusion of how they pretty much cheap out on their contract items, they could probably get these at a comparable price to the iconic kabars which have worked well for around 80 years. I know I never had an issue with rust during my enlistment.

Beautiful knife, shitty coating they put on it. It looks blistered. Good looking though

I cant remember if it was You who I was taking to about these knives earlier....?
Does the length of the handle Feel smaller than the Becker? Specifically where our fingers go? Do they feel cramped? Visually I love the Spartan handle shape, I just wonder/wish it was a half inch longer...

I personally find the becker a little to big, very thick. I prefer the spartan handle. I wear a size large glove. You can overlook my 76 year old wrinkled hands. Hope this helps.View attachment 2204583View attachment 2204582

One other observation. The jimping on the handle looks like it could chafe the web between the thumb and forefinger in a hammer grip. Most knives don't put jimping there but on the rear part of the blade spine for a reason. Might be OK with gloves though ("Operators!").

You may be right but the jimping is rounded off and kinda smooth.

In my head, I was already thinking of modifying that, and grinding it off...... making the hump on the back more pronounced.
I generally Hate jimping.

It also looks like the rivet holes line up perfectly for the tec-lok attachment.

I don’t think they even issue KA-BAR knives anymore.
My understanding is that they are an NSN item, and generally speaking you're allowed to have them, but they are not generally issued. My understanding again is that few bother to carry a large fixed blade knife these days; with nearly everyone carrying a multi tool and maybe a smaller fixed blade or some other decent sized folder. I've never served, but my dad was a Navy Corpsman in the 80's and early 90's and carried his Kabar, but seems to have been on the tail end of the generation that was happy to carry such large knives. My buddies that went on to serve carried multi tools and a pocket clip folder.

This again?? You, my friend, should really reconsider those pinky amputations we were talking about… ;)
