Hello my fellow knife enthusiast,
A few weeks ago I got a shoto blade made by spartan blades as a birthday gift and noticed that it had some vertical play. Well this acknowledgment led me to run some test on the lock and eventually end up spine whacking it, to my surprise the lock failed with little pressure and made me a bit scared as this knife is advertised as a “combat folder”. Of course I understood that not everything’s perfect so I spoke with the customer service through email and she sent a replacement. The replacement had solid lock up for a week however it started to develop more and more vertical play, this again led me to spine whack it which it then failed again. I told the customer service rep about my expiercence and she said this is an issue that has only been reported by me and that I should send it in for a refund. I do not wish to speak bad on spartan blades or deter anybody from buying from them of course, the company was very understanding and helpful, I just wanted to share my expierence and see if anybody had the same issue or if they could provide a fix. I don’t want to return the knife but if it’s unsafe to use I will.

Why anyone would do a spine whack test is beyond me.

I'd also recommend this Karambit, but it's not something that's readily available. 😜

Personally I think any leaf spring interrupter lock, liner or framelocks basically, are not well suited to any kind of thrusting even if a well made example will perform that task just fine. It's a matter of angles, there's simply no way to ensure that you won't end up driving your fingers straight into the edge as it closes on them. I know secondary locks are not appreciated by most of us, but for a known stabbing chore I would probably pick something like a Benchmade Barrage, an Axis lock where the lockbar can be secured in the forward position, protecting you from freak accidents where the lockbar gets rolled back somehow at *just* the wrong moment for you and your poor handses.

Do you think it’d be possible for someone to do a custom frame lock design on my shoto?
You're going to have to find a person that's has the ability and willingness to do a titanium framelock conversion. There's not many that I know that would do it. My conversion was done by Nathawut and I believe that his books have been closed a long time ago. Not to mention that the conversion could cost you 2x as much as you paid for the knife.
