Speed lace question

So I have a pair of 9" hunting boots with speed laces, which is fine but what I don't understand is that instead of a speed hook like the previous couple the very top of the boot has an eyelet. This doesn't make any sense because it forces you to either tie off with a square or at least a surgeon's knot before lacing the top eyelet.

I have seen multiple boots in the 8-12" range set up like this. Am I missing some sage benefit or what?

Wish I had an answer. If you really like the boots and they're something you're gong to get some miles out of, a local shoe repair/cobbler can replace the eyelets with speed lace hooks for little money.

I think its because not everyone always laces all the way up, so if you do, it would hold the lace in position, you pull the lace into the hooks, then tighten from the top. then removal is easy, you just pop the knot, unstring the hooks. But thats only a guess. It might be to assist those who prefer a full wrap at the top of the boot as well. Or maybe its to provide a top support but with a bit more security than a hook? really just making guesses though.

I recently bought some nylon upper doc marten's for work, really fantastic as a jungle boot, dry pretty fast, since if its a wet day, my feet are getting wet regardless, and with wool socks they breath very well. didn't like that they are eyelets all the way up, so I bought hooks and rivets, and did the top three rows, so I can lace them just to the ankle for just puttering around, or go all the way up for real work. So far six months in, and they are still holding strong, I'm certain I'll be replacing like for like when the time comes.

Leave the lace threaded through the top eyelet at all times. When you put the boots on, just hook the lace onto the hooks, then pull tight and tie. You can put your boots on much faster that way.
