spinning vs baitcasting for big fish

i was wondering if a heavy duty spinning reel with a high max drag ( daiwa regal plus bri) or a round baitcaster would be better for large fish like catfish, carp, pike, and maybe musky.

so even if the drag on the spinning is more than twice the size of the casting it will sill act as a better winch? thanks

The drag has nothing to do with the winching power of a reel.
:)

The drag is a device that lets the spool slip before something breaks... the line, the rod, the gears in the reel, etc.
The larger drag on the spinning reel would allow the drag to slip at much higher weights than a smaller drag (spinning or casting).
Doesn't make it more efficient to crank though.

Its the line making that right angle turn onto the spool that makes the spinning reel work harder.

You can really use either, because when fighting a fish, you are able to pump the rod up and then reel down lessening the need for the more efficient winch.
But, if you were bottom fishing on a boat in the ocean, with 8-12 oz sinkers, you'd appreciate the better winching abilities of a revolving spool reel, every time you had to check your bait.
Like those big Penns you see on all the charter boats.

I'd rather pick the reel based on how I was going to fish.
Trolling, throwing weight & bait, distance casting, casting and retrieving lures...

Hope it helps :)

Check out the Abu Garcia Winch. No price mentioned in your criteria, but it is a bit pricier.

thanks i think i gunna go with an abu garcia c3

I like them :)

I have snagged for big fish , throwing heavy sinkers and hooks below the dam using both. I prefer baitcasting by a long shot. Round Abu Garcias work well , you will be happy with your choice.

For your type of fishing, the benefit of a spinning reel is the ease of casting at night, high speed retrieve to hop of the bank or weeds, ability to cast a small bait unweighted, drift, float fishing, etc.

The benefit of a baitcast is easy casting of heavier weights, louder bait clicker, ease of spare parts for abu 6500 c3, high line cap for the size.( a reel with a similar line cap as an abu 6000 sized reel would be double the weight but rather weak drags for its size)

check out the shimano baitrunners too.

It will cast them a mile. You need to get a rod to match it. I use IM6 flipping sticks from bass Pro.

I got a few c3 as well as half doz other abu reels. All great and the newest one I got is at least 15 years old. If you are fishing for pikes and musky and will be cranking back some water resistant lures, casting reel is the way to go. If you like to throw unweighted soft plastics, spinning reel would be easier to learn on.

Baitcaster is the better choice for fighting big fish. My favorite is the Shimano Curado 200B, not made anymore but can be picked up used a good prices. A tank of a reel.

Check out the Shimano Baitrunners or Spheros spinnerif you have to have one... but

The downside for spinners is line twist. I know they talk every type of technology... example aero wrap/twist buster...etc. that combats this, but in the end if you have a large fish pull drag on a spinner and you are reeling at the same time the line is twisting something terrible and it will lead to a break off.

the c3 cast aerodynamic heavy weights well. In fact if you are casting very heavy weights, a spinning reel would be uncomfortable as all the weight is on the line across your finger. If you are casting lures too, you can try a size or two smaller, which means, 5500 5600 or 4600 or 4500. Those even smaller round 2000 and 1000 sized reels have very weak pinions and the design of the engaging damages it even further. You may like to note however that the spinning reel is excellent for underhand flicks to reach low lying foliage trees. You can do it with a smaller baitcast but not as easily.

Line twist can be quite bad on spinning so what some people do is to choose reels with larger diameters to lessen it and fill it to the spool lip. Spectra lines lessens this too. Hope this helps.

Both designs have caught plenty of large fish. Don't get hung up on the "best design" Use what you are most comfortable with.

i will probably put it on an ugly stik bigwater BWCA/O220270 7' from bass pro. do you think it will fit?
