Spoke to a Cop in San Diego about carrying a balisong...

So I was standing in a Jamba Juice on campus waiting for a smoothie, and a cop walks in...

I strike up a conversation and ask her why balisongs are illegal to carry...

Get a load of this answer...
She pulls a generic POS knife, and opens it, then goes on to explain how it has to do with the knife being able to be locked in its open position...I wanted to mention that a balisong can be locked open, but didn't really feel like chit chating anymore...so i guess some cops don't even know why balisongs are illegal..

Cops aren't the best source of legal advice unfortunately. Just as you wouldn't go to a lawyer to report a burglary in progress, you generally don't want to ask a cop about local knife laws. Some will know the statutes and case history, others will go on their gut feeling about what's legal (ie a Florida cop once stopped Mike Turber for having an auto, despite the fact that autos are legal in Florida). Cops are just a cross section of society in general and have their share of knife-squemish people.
