My new favorite Bushcraft Knife

After hearing all the praise about this knife, I snagged a used one from the For Sale forum.

I'm very glad I did. This thing just rocks. The handle feels great in hand in all the different grips I tried. I thought the G-10 would be slick, given it's shiny appearance. It wasn't, however it was a dry day. We'll see how it works in the wet soon enough.

I have many bushcraft type knives, Kosters, Barkies, Kellams, Blind Horse, Fiddlebacks. This one really impressed me with it's ability. I played around for a few hours and loved it. I'm no fan boy, a knife has to work. This one does! Most of the wood consisted of Beech, Cherry, Ash, and Hard Maple, so no real soft stuff in the wood department.

It drills holes like nobody's business. I started out gentle at first, fearing what I thought was a delicate edge geometry.

As things went well, I got braver. No issues what so ever.

Notching, no problem. Baton in on both sides, tip in and pry out.

Batoning went well,

Even the tough stuff,

Some feather sticks for good measure,

And even some tent pegs,

Given the fact that this was my first day with a new knife, I expected some hot spots, but it was not the case. The Bushcraft did everything I asked of it. It was the most fun I have had with a knife in a long time. This thing peels through wood effortlessly.

My hat is off to Sal and the gang that designed it. Great job!

More to come, but this knife has opened my eyes to Spyderco. A brand I had previously looked at as a folder company.

After receiving the Bushcraft and handling it for a day, I was so impressed with its build quality and design, I grabbed a used but NIB Manix 2 just to try. My first folder in many, many years. I like it's feel, but I'm needing to reacquaint myself with the folder world.

I also see a Temperance 2 in my future.

I looked hard at the Spyderco Hossom series and thought they looked excellent but passed, due to my unfamiliarity with Spyderco. Now I'm kicking myself for that.

Nice Job Spyderco!

Great pics! I haven't handled one yet, but it certainly looks capable.

Nice photos! I have one of the original versions with the maple burl handles that had cracks but were easy to fix. It really is an outstanding design and doesn't take a back seat to any of my production or custom bushcrafters. I know many complain about the sheath but it is well fitted & constructed and I find it a unique change from the typical bushcraft style sheaths.

The Temperence 2 has one of the best production handles I have experienced and is a very nice slicer. Very much like a big brother to the Mule Team knife. There was a time when the Hossom's were highly discounted when discontinued but that time has long passed and I wish I had bought more.

You really put it through the paces. I am glad you could compare it against the other knives in your collection. My first Spyderco fixed blade was a Hossom Forester and that thing is awesome. I wish they were back in production, but I think a lot of people were in your boat: Isn't Spyderco a folder company?

Have you had a chance to play with the Blackbird SK-5? That is my most recently purchased fixed blade and seems to be in the same general category.

Nice feedback and pictures. Good to know and it looks like a knife one should definitely pick up if it cross your path.

Thanks for showing this off to us. Good stuff. How do you feel about not having any jimping on the spine ? I prefer jimping on everything, I feel it would be an improvement. Anything you feel that this knife is lacking or needs improvement ?

Nice photos. When it comes to woodsy stuff the Bushcrafter is the right tool for the job. I prefer it over even my favorite Mora for the ergos. I got one from the first run which were all cracked handles.

I got the G-10 bushcraft about a month ago and love it. About 1 week ago I came across one with spalted maple handles on ebay for a great price and snatched it up. after refinishing you can't even tell where the cracks were. Easily my favorite fixed blade, at least until we get that s90v version.

I have several assorted Bushcraft knives. Some with jimping, some with thumb ramps. Truthfully, I never gave it a thought. This blade fits so well in my hand, that I guess it's a non-issue for me. My Koster knives have very nice jimping on them and I like it. But I really don't see the need on the Bushcraft. My thumb rode nicely on the spine for push cuts. It worked great in a reverse grip for pull cuts. Holding for batoning was fine as well.

It's still pretty early in the relationship, so time will tell. Over the next few weeks before the snow flies, I am going to be building myself a new camp/tarp set-up so hopefully the Bushcraft will see some action.

As to the sheath side of things. I really don't have much of an issue there either. The plastic insert was gone when I got it and it seems to go in and out fine. I don't mind the looks. I may rig a pair of small biners to the top and bottom eye holes and carry it horizontal Baldric Stlye on my weak side. The hole set-up offers that option, or the ability to lash a ferro rod and copius amounts of paracord to it. Do I have a complaint about it. Yes, I wish it was brown instead of black.

This knife has impressed me so much that I have already considered looking for another one. If only to throw in my wife's pack in her vehicle. It would be there if she needed it, and I would have a spare if I needed it. I may wait for the potential new version in S90V or whatever it ends up being. Or I may just go the "bird in the hand" route and snag another one of these.

This is the first review that actually made me want to get a Bushcraft. Good job, LostViking.

Thanks for the info,

I'm looking at the T2 pretty hard. Given what I've seen with the Bushcraft, I feel the need to give it a try.

I see you have acquired a back-up Bushcraft as well!

I like this knife so much I just picked up a 2nd, the G10 version this time. I imagine I will be in for the S90v version being discussed as well.

I bought one about 3 months ago and have been putting it through it's paces. I'm really thinking about selling my other bushcraft knives and keeping this one. It's really that dang good. The edge rolled a bit when I first got it but one strop fixed it and it hasn't since. I think it was because it was so dang sharp out of the box. It was RAZOR sharp.

I have always liked the idea of this knife. I wouldn't mind owning one someday. When I was searching for a similar knife, i ended up with a Bravo 1, which I promptly traded for a folder. I guess I just don't have the need for a buschraft as much as I would like one:)

The Spyderco Bushcrafter has just about the best handle on a knife out there IMO. The O1 is easy the keep sharp. Not to say I wouldn't want a S90v.
