Hey,
I'm new to the forums and new to knives really. I just purchased a Spyderco Civilian G-10 for self defenses reasons and just the overall look and feel of the knife. Can anyone give me some tips and pointers on this knife (How to sharpen it/clean it).
Say I was to cut a water bottle opened with it and cut some things how quickly does the blade dull. Say an intruder had on a jacket or layers of clothing could this blade easily rip through it to his flesh?
Thanks here's the knife http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=60

If you are serious about it being a SD knife, then you'd never play around with it and risk breaking the tip or dulling it. You'd just carry it unused and pray that you'll never need it.

That knife isn't meant to be used as a toy or for utility purposes.

If you really want to hack stuff with it, I suggest that you buy a second one to chop & cut with but leave the "carry " knife pristine.

Or, you can get a Matriarch or Superhawk to cut with instead of the Civilian.

I'm curious as to how this knife would do, if someone was layered in clothing say a heavy winter jacket etc, would the knife get stuck on there clothing or tear through?

That is 100% correct. You never use your dedicated SD knife for utility work. It shouldn't require any cleaning or sharpening as it should be kept like new to begin with.

It's a reverse S curved, fully serrated blade, it doean't take much to be able to start hitting bone through layers of material. Think about it, if you are in an altercation and this thing comes into the mix, it would only get stuck if the user were extremely weak and had a limited range of motion to begin with. It's hard to fight back when you have half your arm or other body part dangling and bleeding profusely.

I think that if the knife was angled correctly it would easily go thru say a pea coat and cause damage. But the first place i would go for is the neck or femoral artery. Hope that knife never has to be used, listen to CWL thats not a play knife!

I agree it is a very nice knife indeed. I want a knife that can be used for everyday carry and still serve self defense proprieties well. (I know the Civilian is for one main use self defense)

The warranty doesn't cover utility use, but it does open boxes, blister packs, and cut rope quite nicely.
Some have used them for mushroom collecting.
The tip is the only part that could be affected, but you can also grind a new tip on a knife. If you use it for light EDC tasks, you'll have no issues anyway.

If you can swing it though, buying a back-up is a good idea.

Oh, I didn't mean using the Spyderco Civilian for everyday carry, I know the Civilian has one sole purpose which it looks to exceed at.

I agree it's not a good edc or utility choice but what you carry is up to you. If you really want to see how it does against clothing I would get some old clothes or a thrift store jacket and wrap up say, a chicken, and slash away. Keep in mind it is intended as a slasher not a stabber. Spyderco seems to know how to make a sandwich so I imagine you will end up with a very cut up chicken but I'd live to hear what you find out if you test it. It would tell you far more than cutting a bottle.
