Spyderco is dead in Canada

Warriors and Wonders is Canada's largest online knife retailer and undoubtedly the best source of Spyderco in Canada. This was just posted on their website;
'Important notice: Due to a recent CBSA decision, we are no longer able to import Spyderco folding knives. As individual items sell out, they will be removed from our web site.'

This is a very sad day for Spydie nuts such as myself. I know there have been various rumblings of the CBSA reaching in it's description of gravity knives and petitions countering their constant sliding definition. What are your thoughts? Is Canada destined to go the way of the UK regarding knife law? Spyderco is literally the only brand I care about and for some reason the only one being targeted at the moment.

I suspect that the socialists will go after all knife manufacturers in due time and ban all OHO knives. As regard to the U.K. laws, the old proverb about apples and apple trees seems rather appropo I should think.

I better go and get another CC so I can run the tab up on that one, buying all the knives I want now before we all get classified as terrorists.

You can still buy large fixed blades, machetes and swords!

But folders are dangerous.

I also heard they are trying to ban lead bullets.... anyone heard of this?

Please remind everyone of this next election.

As a Canadian with some knowledge on what has/is transpired/transpiring, what I would like to know is why haven’t we seen any significant Canadian retailer take this to task? Stand up and fight for your livelihood here.

The Canadian criminal code has not changed, just a policy enforcement agency interpretation has. This is something that can be challenged at a federal level.

I know if it was my business that was suffering because of an agenda as opposed to a law I would be fighting tooth and nail. Just saying.....

I would love to hear Sals current thoughts on these recent events.

I was at my local knife store in Toronto and the owners of the store were talking about how some retailer in BC had a huge shipment seized.

The owners are taking the Canadian Border Services to court based on the fact the knives are not illegal in Canada and thus the CBSA unlawfully seized them.

Here’s to hoping they will win and that will likely cause the CBSA to rethink what are essentially illegal seizures.

There is no law that these knives should be illegal so under what right does the CBSA seize them.

For example if the CBSA decided they were going to start seizing every Volkwagen that was shipped in due to their own internal rules even though the VWs were legal in Canada would that be ok?

Here’s to hoping the case gets a good judge.

I remember a local store owner in Ottawa telling me some years ago that he didn't stock Spyderco because overzealous border agents tended to seize them way more often than other brands. It had something to do with Spyderco's having slick actions and pivot designs that couldn't be tightened down enough to make it through customs.

I will be writing my MP and hopefully if enough people cry foul we can reverse this trend. I know for a fact in another thread Sal said that every 6-10 years he goes through this fiasco with CBSA. All I know is i'm going to miss trying out new Spydies. Fortunately I am very lucky to have a refined collection of keepers that I love and I have mostly tapered off my knife buying. I feel sorry for those who aren't there yet.

Since disassembly now does not void a Spyderco warranty, could a seller remove the blade from the knife and ship it alongside the handles, or ship it separately?

Yes, this may double shipping costs, but it may be a viable work around for a secondary market purchase.

Unfortunately, it shouldn't be about getting a "good" Judge, as a Judge should rule by the law, not preference... But, I do agree about hoping the Judge appointed doesn't see knives solely as "weapons".

wow terrible. it wont just be spyderco though will it?

canada needs their own kniferights type lobbying...or do y'all already have one?

I absolutely HATE seeing this post ... I hate our brother & sisters to the north are going through this ... something that has proved to not accomplish what the politicians think it will.

I would contact all the officials you can get organized as best you can even if it's different groups in different areas ... but communicate and get all the people opposing this nonsense under one umbrella to fight for your rights.

I don't know what if anything we can do from the states to help but if someone finds a way ... let us know ... if we don't help ... we may very well be the next the government tries to overstep its boundaries with nonsense regulations that actually do more harm than good.

Keep fighting for your rights best you can ! ... JJ

yep grassroots campaigning and efforts. its never too late to stop bad idears or make them go away.

canadian cousins if you care about this issue....dont sit on the sidelines like the fudds have done down here, for decades on firearms and cutlery. thinking it wont keep going and wont ever affect their little play pit. cause it will. the bad idear bus never stops without roadblocks and spike strips placed by the people/voters to slow and stop it.

back on direct topic hopefully spyderco and other manufacturers and distributors/dealers in canada are working hard to keep still legal to own product flowing to its customers up north.
