Spyderco Lava

I like this version substantially more than the stainless one: it's thicker and grippier, does not scratch as easily, and it is prettier.

The blade is a bit short and very round, making it good for a few selected specialized tasks. It is not a general purpose EDC. I like both the Balance and the Meerkat more than the Lava for that purpose.

Here are a few more in that general size class:

The blade is VERY stubby doesn't have much of a point, so splinter-picking and the like is out however the blade is very sharp and nicely flat-ground so for slicing and push cutting it works great on smaller items. The ergonomics are very good, with the blade angled to the hand it feels like a natural extension of the arm... but without a larger blade I'm afraid I didn't find it as useful as I was hoping.

If you are interested in this size range, the Balance and Cricket seem better choices to me, though their locks are probably not quite as strong.

I have an early Lava in all stainless. When that was released i thought that G10 would b much better. Looks good to me

Couple more photos...

I wish this knife weren't so expensive. I adore the blue G-10, but $150 is too much for simple VG-10 and G-10 IMO, and on a really small knife at that.

One of Spyderco's cooler knives. Same with the Dodo. Certainly limited and arguably expensive, but cool is cool. Very happy with it.

If it was less expensive I would probably pick up a second one because the ergonomics are awesome. It seems to me it could become as popular as the dragonfly if the price could come down somehow and more people had a chance to try out the ergonomics. I was a hold out on this due to pricing for a while until I tried it at a local store.

I'm still waiting to buy one. I want it but like many have already said. 150 is a lot for such a small knife. I have a nice burgundy meerkat that is VF 10 and cost me 80 shipped. I'm not much of a small knife guy anyway. I love my Tuff, Southard, domino, 560, etc.

Street prices I've seen have been between $125 and $135. I'd imagine they'll be able to be found a bit cheaper once dealers start receiving the ones without CC#'s. It's not an inexpensive knife, but the price isn't bad, IMHO, for a Sprint that required new tooling, especially considering it's a collaboration model, which always adds a bit for royalties. Meerkat was just a re-run with existing tooling in a different color of FRN.

I'd like to help, but I can't find a list of dealers whose names are acceptable to mention here. Know that New Graham is, so I can tell you they had it for $135. CC#'d ones are all gone by now but, AFAIK, nobody has received the plain ones yet.

You can't mention where you got you knives here? There is a list of acceptable names? Can you link me?

Ahhh so the place selling it is not one of of paid member places.

Gotcha! Yes I try to support them as much as possible. All out paid places show out of stock or still as a preorder. Also listing anywhere from 140-180.

I would prefer the 140 area

Thanks, Barman1, guess my search-fu isn't what it use to be. The good news is that Howe's Knife Shop, which had it for under $130, is on the list. As I mentioned earlier, I don't think any dealers have received any of Lavas other than the CC#'d so far. So, if you want one, just keep checking back, they're bound to show up eventually.
