I was at a store the other day, and they had recently become a Spyderco dealer. They had less expensive models, I didn't remember the models. Anyway, they had "Made in China" marked on the boxes. These knives had about 3 in blades, non serrated, appeared to have G10 handles but I can't be sure by just looking. And they were priced at about $50.
Are there any thoughts on these knives?
Dan

Spyderco has a budget/value line and a whole sister brand, Byrd, made in China. They’re solid knives.

Pretty sure you're talkin about the Tenacious. It's a really solid budget knife, every knife nut or Spyderco fan should try one.

Spyderco Value line of knives is made in China. These are very good knives, built with more affordable materials and same Spyderco quality. Several value line folders are among bestselling Spyderco knives. I own Tenacious and Astute, very good knives! Also gave a few Spyderco Tenacious as gifts, no complaints:)

Did the boxes and knives look like these?

If so, they should be Spyderco Byrds made in China with FRN scales/8Cr13Mov steel and the boxes should be green/black (not red/ black) and show the bar coded model/name # on the box end.

Also, on one side of the long end of the box, the origin of the knife should be printed as:

Designed & Produced by Spyderco, Inc.
Golden, CO, USA
Made in China.

You can Google examples of the proper indicators for the knives and boxes on the Net.

OK, I think they were the Tenacious knives. They were not the Byrd. They were in the red Spyderco boxes. For about 50 bucks I think I will try one.
Thanks, Dan

Yes, the Tenacious line of knives (including the Ambitious, Persistence, Tenacious and Resiliance) were made in China. They are part of Spyderco's line of "Value Folders" which also includes the Efficient line of knives (including the Insistent, Efficient and Emphasis) that are also made in China.

See: Spyderco Value Folders

All of the knives in the Tenacious and Efficient lines use G10 scales (instead of the FRN in the Byrd line) but still only use 8CrMov13 steel. I own most of the knives in these lines.

The 3 3/8" Tenacious is an excellent knife for the price, as are all of the knives in these lines but if you want larger blade, I'd also suggest that you take a look at the 3 5/8" Emphasis and the 4 1/4" Resilience

IMO, the Reilience is the BEST VALUE of them all because it's hard to find a 4" knife as well made for just $60.

The raven2 has BD1 steel and G-10 scales
the resilience is offering a new S35v blade soon
