Spyderco Manix 2 XL or???

I've been thinking about the Mega Manix as a folder for camp chores, doubling as a heavier-duty EDC. Does it beat the competition?

Preferences are:
- S30V steel (possibly D2, but I prefer S30V as I'm occasionally in tropical, wet areas.)
- Sturdy construction/lock mechanism to handle tougher jobs in the camp
- Preferably plain edge, drop point

If anyone has other suggestions for the same price (around $100-$120), feel free to post them.

+1 on the Manix 2

- Have only had one SOG that I didn't really like, had blade play much like 90% of the SOGs I've handled
- Spyderco has an excellent heat treat on their S30V which will hold an edge longer than VG-10
- I prefer G10 over FRN, feels grippier and stronger
- FFG will slice better than the saber grind on the SOG

FFG won't necessarily slice better than the grind of the Vulcan (would have to test specific models), but I would go Spydie anything over SOG anything and it's been close to 7 years since I bought a Spydie.

If you can get a chance to actually see and hold a Sog Vulcan I'd strongly suggest it.. I can't recommend it over anything else but as it stands on it's own it's an impressive Blade. The fit & finish and quality of the one I own is truly impressive. Amazingly thick blade and for me feels great in the hand. Comes down to personal preference but I can say I'm very impressed with the Sog Vulcan

I currently own several Manix 2XLs and have owned the SOG Vulcan in the past. Between the two, hands down, Spyderco wins. Both Vulcans I owned had a fair amount of blade play, horizontal and vertical. This couldn't be fixed no matter how I adjusted the pivot. My Vulcans also had a tough time holding a good edge even through some less than abusing daily tasks like food prep and opening packages. My EDC Manix 2XL has taken a fair amount of use, abuse, and defense training and is just now starting to lose it's edge. I've also had no problems or lock play so far in the Manix's ball bearing lock either. In my experience, the difference between these two models is night and day.

I have a SOG Vulcan and I was very happy with it until it developed some horizontal and vertical blade play. Admittedly, it was opened and closed a few thousand times over the course of two years (it's really fun to flick it out and snap it closed with just one hand). It was recently kicked out of my pocket by a ZT 0200. The Vulcan is pretty nice for about $95, but I think you would be more satisfied with Spyderco just because they use better (subjective) materials and their build quality is generally higher than SOG.

Looks: Vulcan > Manix
Everything else: Vulcan < Manix

hate any SOG folder personally. and while I love the lockup strength, size, look, and value, I really don't like spyderco's ball lock. the springs just too tight, makes closing it a two hand job and playing with it for any longer duration of time your fingers will start to get sore pulling the ball back. as long as you're up in that price bracket why don't you go for a paramilitary?

I feel it is my civic duty to weigh in on every SOG Vulcan thread and advise everyone NOT to buy this knife.

the ZT 200 might be another option to look at in that price range as well as the BM 275 Adamas (can be found for around $121)

I have a Manix 2 XL and looooove it, never held the SOG so cant really comment. Also have a ZT0350 and do recommend.

What is that I hear? Bargain on the Adamas? I saw it on sale for $140 before, can you post the link for the 275?

GP knives has it for pretty cheap.... And to top it off, they are a bladeforums authorized dealer.
