anyone in here familiar with the spyderco merlin? other info requested: how sharp do spyderco blades come from factory(plain edge)?

I've handled the merlin but don't own any. It's the same handle as the delica if that helps you any.
In response to your other question, Spyderco knives are top of the line in terms of factory sharpness. I have never found a NIB spydie that wouldn't shave. They are always "scary" sharp!

I have a merlin and two harpys, the Merlin has a 2.5 mm blade and the Harpy a 3mm blade. They are great slicers, be aware though the tip is ground thin so if you torque the tip against something the edge will roll.

That being said I love mine. Merlins are fairly inexpensive but I like the sturdiness of the Harpy a bit better. Both come D*nm sharp from the factory.

I bought the Merlin because of the plain edge option. I also have two Harpys (ss & G-10) and like them both but recently I seem to be carrying the Merlin more often. The Merlin came reasonably sharp out of the box but I feel that it could be made scary sharp if re-profiled and sharpened properly (I'm still trying to learn this art).

thanks for the help guys. I'm inquiring because I aquired one from an ebay auction(waiting semi-patiently for it to arrive) to carry on my vacation. due to parrental influence, I am forbidden from carrying my balisong there(god, I don't know what I'm going to do not being able to flip for 10 days

).

one more thing, could any of you guys post a pic of a merlin/harpy next to something for size comparison.

i have a matriarch, really very similar, like it a lot, carry some, but tip is THIN and looks like it would break pretty easy - just supposition on my part though....

Matriarch and Civilian do have stronger tips than they look. Heat treatmet is optimized for these tips. I haven't tested my knives but this is knowledge from Spyderco (Sal).

I have a G-10 Harpy and I couldn't be more impressed with it. If anyone doesn't have one I gotta say this knife is absolutely irreplaceable, and I think you need one pretty badly. I got mine for $50 and it's a friggin' steal at that price. I don't have a merlin yet but will probably get one for the plain edge option, though I'd prefer a plain edge G-10 Harpy if there were a way of getting one. I think there are plain edge SS Harpies and I might even get one of those & swap the blade out w/a G-10 one. Let us know how you like it once you get it!

yes they are for sure a steal for the price - i got lucky and found my mat for $49.95 about 6 months or so ago, when they were scarce - have been happy w/mine - and like i said, the tip breaking was supposition on my part, they just look thin, but i can beleive they wont if sal says so lol - no seriously they probably wont break, i read a bunch of posts before i bought mine, and i think 1 guy in the spydie forum broke the tip cutting a seat belt or something like that...

it arrived last saturday(6/9), I'm loving it already. I got it for 48.50(shipping included) off ebay(NIB, warrenty, etc).
