I bought on of these recently and hadn't really used it until this past weekend. Holy Cow! I am now a true beliver in D2 steel.
Sunday morning I took a nice ten pt. buck and decided to put the spydie to the test. After skinning the deer and cutting some pretty tough tissue, I was worried my new knife would be in need of a good sharpening. Boy was I wrong. When I finished cleaning the blood and guts out of the knife, I gave a quick pass over my arm and hairs went flying. The blade was still razor sharp!
I have never been so happy with a knife purchase.

Pick one up!

The one's with BG-42 steel are very good too. I've tried Spyderco Military models in D2, BG-42, and S30V. In my experience the D2 holds up best with BG-42 a close second.

Keep in mind that what's used in that Sprint run, i.e. CPM-D2 (particle metallurgy product), is not "common" D2 and it may/does behave differently.

I thought s30v is better then d2 (whats all the hype about??)

It is CPM-D2. It is a trial run with the steel. It is a collaboration between Crucible Steel and Spyderco. CPM-D2 has been getting some very good reviews.

I have both. In my (limited) experience, both hold an edge equally well, but D-2 is SLIGHTLY easier to sharpen.

OTOH, I could be wrong!

How about the locking liner? Any improvement compares to the previous versions in S30V? Cheers!

CPM-D2 has been used by a few manufactures, Now I agree that the Spyderco knives that use it are a limited run... But its not a trial run by any means. CPM-D2 is the same composition but has four main benefits from the CPM process:

1) The primary benefit is the availability of higher alloy grades
2) Increased toughness
3) CPM offers improved grindability
4) Greater consistency

Here is a pic of a Strider that used CPM-D2 (you can see the marking CPMD2 on the blade). Like I said a few manufactures have been using it.

Good question. A lot depends upon the heat treat, you can make either steel shine or look bad depending on that.

I've been testing the CPM D2 against regular D2, and it's showing slightly better edge retention in rope cutting. Both are way ahead of S30v, but I've had bad luck with S30V, YMMV.

I have a CPM D2 Millie also and I have stated on other post, was the sharpest knife I have ever had out of the Box. I also like the fact that it is far cheaper than the BG-42 version ( I have one of those too!) So I plan on buying a back up D2 version because I like it so much and I have to mention I love the Foliage Green G10 Slabs.
