Spyderco or Gerber heat treat better?

Another question for the experts. Which company, Spyderco or Gerber, has the better heat treat on their "premium" stainless blades? The two main blades for disscussion here would be a typical Spyderco VG-10 blade and the ATS-34 blade on the newer Gerber Gator Mates.

I own one of each and have not done extensive testing with either one. I was considering getting an Endura or Native 3D for my self holiday present. I would like to know how these blades and other low cost "premium" stainless blades stack up and if there are any in the $60 or lower range that are significantly better than the others? A second question?

Thank you folks!

I would go with the spyderco no matter what. I have had gerbers before, I had one problem with the clip, I emailed, emailed and then finally called, they told me they were sure it was my fault and I was going to have to pay, if they had let me talk I would have told them it was my fault, but the jerk was so rude, I just let them know it was my last gerber I would own, that was 4 years ago.

I have been very happy with gerber products (pliars/multi tools for the most part) but spyderco is a step above. They're one of best in the business for knives period, and when your talking about economy they're clip it line up is tops bar none.
That said, I haven't handled a gator mate in years, but I always wished they would make one in something along the lines of ATS34. I'm sure its a good knife too.

There's nothing wrong with Gerber, but Spyderco is among of the best. Sometimes they will compromise on materials to hit a price point, but they always get the best possible performance out of whatever they use. And their top-of-the-line models are as good as anything on the market.

I'd go with Spyderco. I had a covert in ATS-34 which was pretty decent, but overall Spydie quality seems better.

Generally I would agree that Spyderco makes a better product than Gerber, but in the case of the Gator Mate vs. the Endura this may not be true.

The only areas in which the Endura has an advantage over the Gator Mate are a comparatively smaller size and an arguably better steel.

In actual useage the handle of the Gator Mate will almost certainly prove to be more comfortable and versatile, and the function and lockup of the ones that I have used have been excellent.

Honestly, if I were making this same choice I would likely end up with the Gerber.

I've never been disappointed with spyderco's products so far, and I think that, since Gerber has been bought by Fiskar's Co. they don't know how to build good blades anymore...:(
Gerber does not even produce one of their finest product anymore: the Yari, and the rest seems to be quiet expensive compared the quality issues they are facing (those are from many echoes I've read here and the rising prices I can see in the knife stores)...
It's really sad to see a once good knife company to be mostly producing "fancy multi-tools" now, because they are so oriented by their top management staff, which has no idea on "what is" and "how to keep" their know-how :grumpy:

Go for I Spyderco Native and join the Native nuts of the forum :D

Spyderco all the way.Its been 10 years sence I have had a good Gerber.I have given up on them.

Spyderco without a doubt. I ve owned a couple gerbers and not been to happy with them. Ive had a lot of spydies and never been dissapointed. They are a great company to deal with and a greater value.
