Spyderco Police G10 Question

Hello fellow BladeForums members,

I am currently considering getting a Spyderco Police G10 for use in my EDC rotation. Insofar as legality, there is no blade length restriction limiting me, and I've yet to receive any negative feedback for what I do carry in the 3.5" range. Even so, I'm looking for some opinions and help in this decision. Who here carries one as a general use EDC, and what are your takes on it in use? Also, a more minor question - I have developed the habit of the middle finger Spyderhole opening with my compression, liner, and frame locks. Is this still possible with the lockback on the Police, for those who carry one?

I would also immensely appreciate some size comparison pictures, if someone would be able to. I've seen the comparisons to the PM2, but some comparisons to the Gayle Bradley, Vallotton, or some Zero Tolerance models would be extremely helpful.

Thank you all,
Thomas

I don't have the Police g10, but i do have the Ulize, which is comparable. It's not ultra light but it is ultra thin, making it almost unnoticeable in my pocket. Sorry, i dont have any comparison pics, but it's among the thinnest of Spydercos.... comparable to the calypso series.... much thinner than the Gayle Bradley for sure! All of the spyderco back locks I own require more force to open than the PM2 and liner lock models. The back locks are great using the Spyder drop method.

It isn't possible to use middle finger to open any of Spyderco's Back Lock knives.
The Police G10 is really slim, but not that easy to carry around and I wouldn't recommend it for EDC. Why don't you consider the Caly 3.5?

The stainless Police was my original EDC in 1989. Carried it exclusively for nearly 10yrs.

I don't mind the weight at all. I've carried it in all sorts of clothes. I was going to get the G10 til I realized the weight was nearly the same. I had an aluminum model for awhile and didn't like how quickly it got marred up. Again the weight difference wasn't much.
I love the ergonomic feel of the grip. It doesn't look to big in my hand. Just right.
Although I strongly suggest you seek one out and handle one.

I like the Police G10, and its krazy cousin the Ulize. They are easy to carry for EDC because they are so thin in the pocket. I do find the blade to be much longer than is necessary for EDC tasks, but that's up to you. A knife with a shorter blade is just more nimble for opening packages, cutting zip ties, etc. The Police is not easy to flick with a thumb, and would probably be even more difficult with a middle finger, so you might not be able to do that.

I have both the Ulize and the Police 3. Both are thin and very easy to carry. The Police's blade is a little longer. I think the Ulize is a better looking design and is easier to open with the thumb. I carry either of these two models when I have to go to the dentist, doctor, bank etc. because they are so unobtrusive.
Probably needless to say fit and finish is excellent on both models.

Thank you all for your responses. They have been very helpful. The size no longer seems to worry me, especially being so thin, as you've all described. Being able to flick it open is by no means necessary in my decision - I just enjoy having multiple options for opening, and I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out with as much as I'll play with it (as we all do). Is one-handed closing a manageable operation (This being somewhat imperative)? I'm able to do so with an Endura, delica, and harpy, if those references for such help.

I love the Police G-10! It fixed a lot of things I didn't like about the original Police (slippery handle, single position clip, hollow grind). It carries really well for its size because it's thin and narrow. I like to pair it up with an original Police or an Ulize.

As far as comparing the Ulize to the Police G-10, I think the Police is a more versatile knife and I like the flat grind better, but the Ulize's blade shape is very cool. The handle on the Police feels a bit better to me (I have large hands). The Ulize is also a bit thicker.

My favourite Spydercos are G-10 handled lockbacks with flat ground blades (Chinook, original Manix and Mini-Manix, JD Smith, etc.).

Those are some great pictures, Franciscomv; thanks! How would you say it compares to some of the other popular Spydies?

My two favorite EDCs for a while have been the Benchmade AFCK sprints & the Police 3. Its thin & flat & slides in & out of the pocket easily. The ergonomics are great & there's no weight issue for me. The build quality is great & it feels solid all around. Other than the length when open there is nothing unusual about this folder. I think that may have been a goal with this model (long blade in an easily pocketable package).

One hand openings are limited to the regular thumb opening & the "Spyder-drop" but its pretty easy & intuitive if you're used to Spyderco lockbacks. One hand closing is no different than an Endura. The G10 is smoother than most folders while giving just enough texture to aid in grip.

I bought mine because I wanted a folder with that blade length & liked the lines. I was surprised how much I liked it once I had it in hand. It really snuck up on me. It felt like a thinner version of my AFCK, which was perfect for me. If you get one & find that you don't like it hit me up & I'll take it off of your hands because I need a second one stashed back.

Thank you so much, flatface77! That is very reassuring, and with your offer as backing, I will be ordering one this week!

Well, it's got a classic Spyderco look, and I think it's one of the few knives with a blade that long and steel liners that still carries very well. VG-10 is a nice steel, but I'd like to see a sprint in something like S90V. Oh, and since I saw you asked, it can be easily flicked open with the index or middle finger.

Here are some pics with three common Spydercos so you can see for yourself.

Endura 4, Paramilitary 2, Police G10 and Military.

Sorry for the photo quality, I'm far from a gifted photographer and it's midnight here (so no natural light).

Thank you, Franciscomv! And no apology necessary for the photo quality; they show exactly what I need. That is quite a substantial knife, and I shall still be picking one up this week. I will post back with my impressions!

As of this morning, the Police G10 has been ordered. It is in transit, and thanks to a great deal on one day shipping I couldn't turn down, it shall be here tomorrow!

Cool. Looking forward to your impressions. If you end up not liking it I'll be buying it & having my old one rescaled. I've been putting that off until I had a safe queen.

You will like it; I carried a G10 for 5+ years until a dumb a$$ friend using it as icepick in a cooler hit the bottom of a beer bottle and broke the tip off :-( Spyderco regrind it to fix the tip but it is now a 3.5 inch Police LOL. That was my first real knife

Update: I received the Spyderco Police G10 in the mail yesterday! Sorry, flatface77, but this one is a definite keeper. It was a little gritty to start, but after a couple dozen opening/closing cycles, it's rather smooth. This is undoubtedly a sizable knife, but the slimness mitigates that fact quite a bit. Overall, another great knife from Spyderco! Thank you all for your help in this decision - I am greatly enjoying my new knife as a result.

Best,
Thomas

congrats...its a great knife, in fact, its my favorite Spyderco. so much blade in a slim package, I use mine in the kitchen all the time.
