Just received a Sage 1 in a trade.
Thanks JJ.
Anyway, I'm absolutely blown away by the knife.
Seems to be virtually brand new.
Here's a quick rundown:
- blade is absolutely razor sharp, great looking shape, although it's thinner than some of Spyderco's hard core knives, it's more than strong enough for anything I'll use it for
- the CF handle is beautiful, and has a nice bumpy texture; the shape fits my hand perfectly (how does Spyderco do it; I've had a few different ones in my time, all with different looking handles, but all feel great)
- the jimping on the blade spine and choil are perfectly placed and offer a secure purchase; not too rough, not too smooth
- the liner lock engages perfectly, with a lot of room to wear in; it also passed the spine whack test easily
- lock up is bank vault solid; zero play in any direction
- blade is perfectly centered when closed
- fit and finish is among the best I've ever seen; close to the Sebenza I once owned; and it just plain looks beautiful
- I'm a big fan of the wire clip; all rounded corners, slides in the pocket easily, but is very secure; stealth black, and allows very deep pocket carry
- my only minor gripe is that opening and closing are a bit sticky; I'm sure it'll get smoother with use, though.
My poor Caly 3 has been relegated to the drawer. I love that knife and thought it was the perfect EDC. Not any more.
I had planned on buying a Para 2 before this came, now, I'm not so sure.
Everybody should go right out and buy one of these.
I just want to go cut some stuff up with it.

Thanks for the review. I must agree with you on your findings.
It's a good thing to be a littly sticky when opening, so it won't open when you don't want it to.

Good Luck!

I helped my wife's friend buy one for her husband for Christmas. It came to my house first and I played around with it first(I didn't use the knife). I was very impressed with this knife. The fit and finish was much better than almost all of my Golden Colorado Spyderco's.
Congrats on the knife. Enjoy it.

Just put these up on another topic about which Spyderco to buy. I saw your topic and thought you may like them here too. :)

Some photos of the Sage and its lock,

Sorry it’s a bit dirty, it’s a user. I own a few spyderco but this my EDC. Love it.

A little follow-up:
I loosened the 2 pivot screws a tiny bit; it's definitely smoother opening and closing now.

I just bought the sage 2 ti, same thing. Amazing fit and finish, like better the last two mini-grips I bought (one was a limited edition - s30v). And I love the handles, super easy to open/close despite me being left handed.

I too thought I would like the Caly3 more than the Sage1. Nope, I even prefer the Sage1 over the 2. It should definitely smooth out over time. Mine's the smoothest knife I've ever handled.

I'll tell you what I like better about the Sage.
- looks sexier
- longer blade better for slicing bagels
- I much prefer liner locks to lock backs due to easier ergos
- S30V will probably hold an edge better than VG 10
- love the feel of the textured CF
- did I mention it looks sexier

I really appreciate this review, the Sage is my favorite Spyderco and I don't even own one. I've gone through most of their popular lineup except the Sage because the "Taiwan" stamp was too much of a bonerkill for such a sexy knife and I regret my judgement reading this review.

It is one of the best looking knife designs short of anything requiring delicate milling and handfitting. Wouldn't call it hard use, but I would use it hard everyday just because of how much I enjoyed fiddling with it.

Thanks bud!

Hoopster, what do you like better on the sage 1?
The Sage1 fills/fits my hand better than the Caly3 and is also smoother operating with the liner lock vs back lock. Nicer carbon fiber texture as well. Flow through design is easier to clean out.

It also fills my hand better than the Sage2 which is a tad thinner and gets narrower towards the front of the handle due to the frame lock being engaged. The Carbon fiber provides more grip than the titanium as well. Those two points make it feel much better during serious work.

I love both Sages, but I'm dubious they would be any better than fair to middling bagel cutters. Did you compare them to a longer-bladed traditional bread cutting knife?

I realize this is an old thread. Sorry 'bout that. New member here. Just wanted to "chime in" and say I just purchased a new Sage 1 from a member on a another forum, and I am stoked! I haven't read one bad review of this knife. Not one! I love CF, and I love S30V! What a combo! I think this Sage 1 will probably replace my Alias II as my EDC, and I really like my Alias II. Thanks for letting me spout off! lol
