Spyderco Sage 5 vs. PM2

So I'm thinking about buying my first Spyderco, they just started to interest me for some reason. Of course, the PM2 is on the list, specifically the blurple handles from bladeHQ version, but I am also interested in the Sage 5. Both have the compression lock, and both are flat ground, etc. But I was wondering which would be a better introduction to the Spyderco brand. I like the Sage because of the deep carry clip, but the PM2 has deep carry clips available. Anyone own both and would like to give their opinion of which is best?

Thanks for your help. :)

I like the compression lock and have the Sage 5, 2 PM2s, as well as a Superleaf. The PM2 in your preferred model is about $15 more than the Sage. It's also a longer knife both blade- and handle-wise. My PMs are both S30V like the Sages, while the Blade HQ PM is S110V which should take and hold a better edge while maintaining good toughness.

I honestly haven't carried or used my Sage 5, having picked it up both for the lock and to keep my Sage collection complete. The PM2 is perhaps the quintessential modern Spydie. The Burple version is a lotta knife for the money, is quite popular, and should retain good value should you decide to move on.

The Sages are all interesting, solid knives, but I'd vote for the Burple (or any) PM2 as a good first Spydie.

The PM2 is arguably the best edc knife on the market, and IMO unquestionably the best edc for the money. And I like Sages!

Just FYI, the "blurple" scales are not a dealer exclusive to BladeHQ. You can get them in many places. That said, BladeHQ is awesome so certainly buy from them if you like. I'm just noting this for clarity.

PM2 in any of the steels that you like. Blurple 110 is excellent, the S35vn and S30 are great and less work to sharpen. Beware in my experience the M4 will rust in a flash so extra care with it. I like the PM2 blade shape and handle. Sage is very nice knife but I find the blade is a bit more limiting, tip and blade more rounded. Deep carry is good, less weight.

I never cared for the proportions of the PM2, but I picked up a Sage 5 as soon as it came out. It has been a great edc, especially when I want to carry something light. Not to confuse your decision even more, but what about a Para 3? It is a PM2 scaled down to the Sage size. If/when we start seeing the Para 3 in different color and steel options, I may pick one up. For now it just seems too similar to my Sage 5.

I would go for the blurple PM2.
You will be getting a ton of value going that way.
The s110v is a fantastic steel! The trick with it is not to let it dull badly.
I'll at least strop it after I use it. It will hold its edge a very long time if you keep up with it.
Lotta knife for the money!
Good luck!

Welcome Matthew. Both are terrific choices; I own each. You appear to be leaning towards a specific PM2 from a reputable dealer - if that's the case, go for it.

I'd recommend the PM2, unless your decision comes down to preferring a smaller size EDC, then get the Sage 5. I say this even though I happen to carry the Sage 5 (and 2) more. But that's only because I prefer slightly smaller in my pocket for EDC purposes, and because of where I live. However, the PM2 is the first knife I reach for hiking or weekend/outdoor activities.

PM2 for me, it is a more versatile design and the size works fine with the compression lock

The sae is a very interesting serie but it offers less steel options and it is more limited to light urban EDC tasks compared to the PM2
I like the sage very much but shall I take one it will be the liner lock version which iMHO is better for this size of handle than the compression lock

I don t have theSage 5 but I have the Sage1 with a liner lock and I feel it is very underrated. The pm2 is better for me ,however.
