Does anyone use a stake anvil such as this for forging? Would you recommend it to start out on? Any advantages/disadvantages when compared to a horned anvil? I do not imagine that I will be using the anvil for anything other than knife making FYI.

I have a set of stake anvils I use for various tasks and I think you could start off with one if that's all you have. You just need to be sure it is rock solid both vertically and laterally. I have a 3" thick 30" round drop from the scrap yard with a 50# vise mounted to it, I swing the vise over the drop and use that to hold my stakes.

With that said, you would be well served to swing into your local scrap yard (not junk yard) and look for steel drops, you can probably buy a nice drop in various sizes for about 70-80 cents a pound, sometimes less. I have several, the one mounted to the stump is what I use when I don't want to risk damaging the face of my anvil with something out of the ordinary.
