Standard folder as a money clip?

As I sit at the beach on vacation. My spyderco salt sits in my surf shorts pocket with my room ID, license and credit card clipped in the knife pocket clip.

I have been carrying a knife for 20 years or so and have never thought of doing this. I am wandering if anyone uses their folder as a money clip on a regular basis? I am not talking about money clips designed with a small knife but an actual knife used as a money clip.

Anyone and if so what knife and how does it work out? Just curious.

I usually clip my knife to my pocket. I don't want to take out my knife when I'm taking out my money, and vice versa, so not for me. No reason you couldn't though, if that's your thing, and of course, a Salt is perfect for the beach.

I suppose it could work in a pinch, but I do see some practical issues.

First off: What if you wanna use the knife? Now all that stuff is suddenly loose.

Second: Did you buy this smooth and slim edc knife that fits snugly in your pocket and only takes up a minimum of space, just to make it bulky with all that stuff attached?

I have used a Spyderco Cricket with a Nishijn cover as a money clip for years. Cash only, and I always have another knife to use with me.

ts. Don't know how this posted. Tried to say that I frequently use the current carry as a clip for small amounts of cash. At a farmers market/craft show/flea market this allows my "change" from a 20 to be easily available for the next find without digging out the ol' wallet. Mostly well worn $50-$100 users. For quick knife use like cutting a string or such I find that you do not need to remove the currency just wrap it up an so have a slightly larger handle. Agreed that you cant do a larger job that way; I also use my keychain knife the same way. Leave attached to keys.

you mean using the clip as a money clip? i see several things wrong with this

1. some pocket clips shred pocket liner, what do you think they'd do to an overly circulated 20?
2. what if you wanted your knife and not the money?
3. what if you wanted your money and not the knife?
4 (bonus) that's what billfolds are for, and you can buy an RFID minimalist wallet that holds 2 cars and some folded bills.

I used a Boker Wharcom and Subcom as a money clip for awhile but I prefer a regular wallet and a bigger knife.

I used a Sog Blink as a money clip for a few hours and couldn't stand the way it felt when I sat down. As others mentioned, it's also a PITA to unclip everything if you need the knife. I carry a standard money clip and a normal sized pocket knife.

If it works for you, more power to ya. I’d suggest having an extra knife though so you don’t have to remove all that stuff when you need to cut something.

I read the title and said No way, never. Until I read the first 2 lines of post.

Excellent idea! Way to be resourceful on vacation. Mix it up a little. You can't be carrying a wallet in boardshorts!

Where's vacation?

I have done this a number of times. It's almost always been when on vacation and want to consolidate a little. I don't wear shorts often, so usually end up mixing things up a little when I do. As a blade/money clip combo I've tried...

Spyder Delica
Spyder Dragonfly Salt (on the Waverunner).
Boker Subcom
Boker Nano
Kershaw Chive

When I've used my knife/clip this way, it's never been about optimum gear set-up. But rather a compromise that still allows adequate resources rather than simply going without something.

If I don't want my wallet on me, I usually use a medium binder clip for license, credit card, cash. I don't see the benefit in using a medium-to-large knife as a money clip since it makes the knife itself a lot more awkward to carry and a PITA to use as a knife.

I do this all the time. Some knives just plain beg to carry your cash.

Spyderco Delica, Dragonfly, and the best of the best... the Baby Jess Horn.

Kershaw Chive, Scallion and Leek work very well.

The ProTech Runt is probably one of the coolest, simply because, you know, Auto.

The Benchmade Bugout is light enough and thin enough, and the deep carry clip lends itself to holding cash very well.

Many is the day I never use the blade of a knife, but use the shit out of the clip for loose bills.
