So, I think it is time we really start to step up and get this going, but I am only one person with limited time. So I require, at the least, input from others. If not help.

What needs to be done?

Contact:
-Individuals/hobbyists - How to do this? Social media, website, forums, etc.
-Manufacturers - Phone, Email. Which companies and how many?
-Retailers - Phone, Email. Which retailers and how many?
-Kniferights.org - In hopes that they can help out in any way? or become affiliated?

Any input or incite would be appreciated. Or help drafting up a letter that I can start sending out.

Thanks in advance!

I am assuming by your nic you are in BC Canada ... I would reccomend contacting Knife Rights here in the states and I bet they would give you guidence ... I will post a contact link on your profile page since I cannot pm you.

Good luck JJ

This is what I was talking about earlier. Canada needs a kniferights-like group. Individual letters to MPs will do nothing. They have to see that there is a large group of voters who will act as a cohesive unit. If our demands are not met we will vote against them. If they are met we will vote with them.

The group should be, knife makers, knife retailers, knife users (workmen, chefs) knife hobbyists, etc.

Most of all we will need a lawyer who is on board or money to get a lawyer on board. We should start a kickstarter or whatever to start collecting money for this cause.

Workers! of course! I should know that as I require one for my job! Thanks!

A kickstarter is a brilliant idea as well. But I will have to work out the logistics of that before hand. Once you start dealing with money you need lawyers involved first.

Now to source out a good lawyer....

Canada’s disposition is alot like NYCs. The only way to get the public behind it is if we show that police are unfairly charging minorities with knives that are legal with a tightened screw, and illegal with a loosened screw.

That will be alot easier to generate support than the issue that knife collectors who can’t get flipper knives.

As social issues we could say the ban against flipper (and according to the border agency, basically any one hand opening knife) is discriminatory against people who are handicapped. Or how knives that open easily with one hand are better in cold climates because you don’t have to take both your gloves off to open them.

Almost all knife crimes are comitted with kitchen knives. How fast a knife can open is irrelevant. They try to argue a folder can be hidden in your hand and made ready quickly. It is a stupid point. A fixed blade can be hidden up one’s sleeve and made ready even faster.

All good and valid points. These will be saved for the battle after we get this going.:)

Here’s another one. The law is effectively putting canadian knife makers in a situation where they can’t do warranty work for their international customers.

Shipping a knife to a canadian maker for warranty work risks confiscation.

This aggravates me too! It is hurting businesses on multiple levels! We also can not ship our knives to other counties for repair.

Yup... Find something that isn't a problem and make it one... But the point was 86 charges for something that isn't illegal!

I had thought that the knives weren’t actually illegal here. Only that the border was stopping them because of some way they were interpreting the law. I had read the actual memo from the border agency at one point. Someone linked it on a thread here.

Here is the actual notice from the Canadian Border Service Agency. (Aka the frickin’ nazis)

Here is a petition you can sign. (That I estimate will do nothing)

I have signed the petition and read the CBSA notice, multiple times. Yes, you are correct, these knives are not illegal according to Canadian law. But they are still charging him for whatever reason. As unfortunate as it is for the store owner, the silver lining is if he gets off, there will be a president set. Although I find most of the time these types of cases come down to a plea bargain. Where he will accept a lesser charge in turn for the others to be dropped. Which leaves us in a bad situation for fighting this later down the road.

This is exactly what is happening right now with the RCMP reinterpreting the laws regarding firearms and firearms magazines and this is being fought by fairly large organizations and does not seem to be going very well.

I have really started to hate Canada in these recent years.

Yeah me too. In Canada being a socialist is considered a good thing. The nazis were also socialist. (Nazi, national socialist) They were only right wing in comparison to communists.

Hitler believed in universal healthcare (for germans) and confiscating all weapons as well.

Canada is becoming a nanny state. The truth is there is zero respect for the rights of the individual in Canada. Free speech in Canada is not a protected right like it is in America. It is always dangerous when the rights of the group suspercede the rights of the individual.

I hate to see Canada go down this road ... we've seen how poorly it's gone in other countries and actually ended up with negative affects.

Here in the states we still battle daily against alot of proposed gun and knife laws ... and so far holding our own and gaining in some areas ... but its long term organized and countless memership in these organizations that do the lobbying and foot work ...

takes not only memberships and money but membership willing to help ... by going out to speak to people ... writing politicians and contuning to apply pressure that can't be ignored.

But taking the first step is great ... contact all the makers and dealers and outdoorsmen you can and come together ... finding "the voice" for your cause might be the toughest but you have several makers that have voiced their opinions already that may get involved to do so.

Doug Ritter is relentless with his efforts and will tell you how time consuming and how much it takes but he believes in it and has done great work ... but it takes backing also.

I wish you all the best in your efforts to get this "interpretation" of a law set correct.

Thanks JJ and Lapedog

This gives me a good place to start with this.

That article is from 2011 and the guy was selling those knives to teenagers for the most part. PEI as you know is very small and this sort of thing would be noticed immediately and very much frowned upon. That's why someone (probably a "concerned" parent) tipped off police that he was still selling them.

Here is a link to the outcome of that case. It didn't go well because he was selling those knives "under the counter". IMO he should have fought the initial seizure and kept everything above the counter and agreed not to sell to anyone under 18y/o.
