Looking for middle of the road steak knives w/o serrated blade. My head is spinning with all the knives out there. Any recommendation for a particular brand? Preferably not China made. Thanks.

I know serrated is what most folks have CSG, but I'd like to be able to sharpen my knives when they get dull. Not totally against serrated, but I'm just not set up for sharpening serrations. Plus, as serrated knives begin to get dull, they have a tendency to tear rather than cut.

Hello Michaux - I don`t know where you are situated but this local NW England company has an extensive range of plain bladed steak knives with wood handles or all stainless might give you some ideas.
I just used them and they`re a great company to deal with with sterling customer service.
Unfortunately it is National delivery only.

If you want regular / jumbo non-serrated plastic / wood / stainless handled steak knives in multiples at a certain price-point in dollars / euros I may be able to narrow it down a little for you.

These Brazilian Tramontina Jumbo Steak Knives don`t look too bad for example and they`re available Stateside / Worldwide and are reasonable quality / value.

I have a budget Tramontina 6" utility with 2 rivets and wood handle and it`s still going strong after more than 50 years of heavy daily use !

If you wanted say French, German or Swiss knives they would probably be $5-$20 upwards each but would last for decades with care.

I know you said you didn`t want Chinese ones but I got this (top pic) gorgeous 5 inch damascus bladed utilty with two rivets and polished magnolia handle for $5 with delivery and it arrived quickly and really sharp !

I'm in Pennsylvania roaduck. I'm looking for something along the lines of decent fitment, decent steel for edge retention, carbon steel which I like but my wife doesn't, so... maybe stainless, and decently fit wood scales. Again, I'm just looking for something "nice", which I know is subjective as heck, and knives that I can maintain the edge. Oh, and you're right, that Chinese made knife is a looker! Who made it? Thanks for your reply and suggestions.

Tried the Wusthof Epicure maybe two years ago and they’ve held up every bit as good as the Classics so far. A little less pricey than the classics which was fine because we almost never sit down and cut steak on individual plates. Forged. Same blade steel as the classics. I just like the name/quality/price-point. Usually about $50/ea when you buy a set, and a little less if you’re looking at individual open-box stuff on eBay.

Thank you Marchaux111 - much obliged - I see what you mean; let`s see...

IMHO the Tramontina ones are cheap, functional and robust but a bit ugly.

How many do you need and what is your total max budget inc taxes and p&p ?

The Chinese one above was a total bargain and is much, much harder than a typical steak knife at 60-61 HRC - the majority of steak knives are in the ballpark of 47-55 HRC so will need much less sharpening and is hard enough to use everyday in the kitchen.
It is more than twice the price of what I paid for it a few months ago but in my opinion it is still a bargain. If you just wanted a pair it wouldn`t be too dear.

It`s the TWK - SS17 steak knife on ali

The Tojiro VG-10 are gorgeous but are $170 for four w/o tax and shipping.

Here is a European site that lists 262 steak knives - from a few dollars each upto $150 each which might give you some ideas of what brand and style to look out for Marchaux111

Tojiro makes them in VG-10 if you don't want to f-around.

I'm pretty tired of serrated steak knives myself.

I hit serrated knives on a steel, several passes on the serrated side and a couple of swipes on the non serrated, I’ve done it for years that way and it’s worth the few seconds that it takes.

Good idea Cattoon - that`ll do nicely !

Okay. I'll put a lid on this one. I hopped on ebay and found what looks to be a very nice set of six reconditioned "vintage" Chicago Cutlery steak knives (103S) complete with original holding block. From what I read, the older CC knives made in the USA weren't that bad a knife. I paid too much for the set I'm sure, but am thinking they're better than the current made CC steak knives of the same style and I just like the looks of them, the carbon steel, shape of the blade, and the wood scales. Plus I can keep them sharp with very little effort. Just couldn't bring myself to either spend the big $ for a really good set or settle for some foreign made mystery steel stainless steel knives. I did realize in my search that serrated steak knives seem to be the thing as non-serrated are harder to find. Again, I want to thank you all for your help.

I`m so glad you found a good old American cutlery compromise M Michaux111
Like these $70 ones -

Glad to assist and Thank You and the other more knowledgeable contributors than myself for the help.
I wish you all the best for all your future endeavours in these terrible, tumultuous times.
The beauty about old knives is they are a known quantity that last and can be refurbished and sharpened - and helps save the planet too.

Yep roaduck, that's them. Should arrive today and I'll see what I got. I think I'm going to be happy. Old school, American made. Thanks all again!

40 years a meatcutter here. Always used either F. Dick, or Forchner steak knives. Never serrated, but did use one of what was called a Granton style. Very smooth slicer.

Got ya C captn-tin Granton Knives established in Sheffield, Yorkshire UK in 1601 ( birthplace of Stainless steel ) did Grantons ( indentations to the blade edge of the knife in the 1920`s ) invented them for food-release of manual blades in a commercial setting as an alternative to electric slicing.
The copyright may have expired 100 years ago ? but nobody else does them the same; all the other brands indents are set mid blade - I know by experience that they work because there is much less or zero suction so food gets processed faster.
Time is money as they say.
All the other designs literally suck.

I have these slicers and they work remarkably well in comparison to competing traditional Western blade geometries; no need to pull food off the knife in between slices; especially beef, pork, lamb, tuna and salmon.

I rehandled a set of 103 s steak knives using birdseye maple. I might list them when I get out of rehab from broken ankle, my wife uses one as a paring knife and loves it.

I will say that I've been using the vintage CC 103's I purchased and they are excellent steak knives. No complaints what-so-ever.

Sanelli knives has a steak knife in the Premana line . These could prep food too. The micro serration is really excellent . A big seller for us ,per piece or boxed sets of 6
