I went to the fanciest, most expensive restaurant I’ve ever been to in my life. They had nice looking steak knives, but I took my own. It’s been my experience that any time I go to a restaurant that serves steak, their knives are not too good.

Do you guys use your own knife when you order steak?

The last piece of beef I got at a restaurant didn't require a knife. Medium rare prime rib. Melted in my mouth like cotton candy.

I do take a personal steak knife with me and often use it though not always for steak. Just last week I used a higonokami personal steak knife made by Shun for my salad. Worked fantastic on those huge chunks of iceberg cheaper less attentive restaurants serve in their chef salads, and those cherry tomatoes and broccoli crowns were no match either. They are great to have for sausage and peppers too as well meatball sandwiches. I eat for pleasure so using one of my articles of stabby during such an event just adds to the fun. Fruit samplers work for the same purpose as well.

I never did until I joined this forum and became a knife knut.

Of course you can use the cheap, dull serrated steak knife that is provided.

Heck, last year I had a steak dinner I hosted in extremely rural Nevada and I was actually able to use one of those plastic knives used for picnics to cut my steak.

However, I ended up getting one of those KAI personal steak knives and I enjoy using it. It is certainly sharper than any steak knife that would have been provided. I use it unobtrusively and it brings me joy so I don't see a problem.

I use an Opinel #8 quite often for steak mostly. Or my case hobo. Or my GEC 15. Or my AC lambsfoot. I always have one of these with me. They cut other things also

Its like how there used to be a joke about how you could tell if the water was safe at a hotel by how thin the toilet paper was. If it was thick expensive stuff, don't touch the water! If a steak house needs a good bit of cutlery to handle the steak, its not that good.
Of course I do use my own when I'm out bbqing or whatever, its just the polite thing to do. But not typically at a restaurant.

I usually dont go to eat steak. If i do i cook my own. I will use a slipjoint for the occasions i do need to cut food. My edc folder is used for other task. Sometimes i dont have the chance to fully clean it.

As long as you fill it with olive oil I see no problem.
But of course. Only once have I had an episode of incidents at an eatery. My potato was ever so slightly lukewarm. So I shot the waiter in the knees with my .38 snub. The whole place erupted in laughter. I stood up, bowed and proceeded like nothing took place. Quite the spectacle indeed

I've never felt the need to use my own knife on a steak at a restaurant . I certainly wouldnt want to cut into a ceramic plate with one of my knives. Thats why I use a wood cutting board at home.
