Totally new.
Would like to make a knife.
Where would be a good place to buy A2 steel blank to make a knife?
I’m not looking to forge anything.
Would just like a blank I could scribe, cut to shape and grind how I want.
Thanks.

A blank is already profiled. Pretty sure JT sells blanks and can heat treat them for you too if you want to grind post heat treat. If you want to cut out the shape you want then you just need a piece of bar stock. Aldo (New Jersey Steel Baron) has some A2 bar stock as does Alpha Knife Supply. Both great vendors.

Wasn’t sure if I was using the correct terminology.
Bar stock is probably what I was looking for then.
Who is Jt?
Still looking into it all.
Fairly certain A2 is what I will go with. Preference would be CPM M4 but still researching.

Welcome to Shop Talk. Fill out your profile so we know where you live and a bit about you. This helps us give better answers.

Most all knifemaking suppliers carry A2. It is a fine steel and makes a great knife. There are many other steels to use, too. Tell us a bit about how you are going to make the knife and how the Heat Treatment will be done and we may be able to guide you better.

Thank you.
Filled out.
Working from beginning to end with steel is new. Machining finished metal isn’t.

Still looking in to it and considering options.
Not sure I could manage a good heat treat without buying more equipment but looking at options to do so.
If not was thinking of doing design/shaping, sending off to get heat treated.

Been going over Crucibles data sheets and couple others trying to figure out options.

It's good to get to know the various knifemaking suppliers as sometimes one or the other will have what you need.
A2 is so common that you can get it from Online Metals along with mild steel and a few other things you might want for guards etc.

Larin has a new rating chart on the different steels

AEBL is a good option for a budget stainless knife, try you hand with it and you wont be disappointed. At 62 HRC it will be a world od difference between standard production knives. You don't want to waste your cash on expensive steel if you still dont know if you can pull off the grind and everything else. A2 is a also a good place to start with.

If you want A2 or O1, Starrett sells precision ground flat stock in both. Lots of size options.
Any good MRO will have it.
Starrrett has an Amazon store too.
