Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I am trying to get into knifemaking (still accumulating tools but I got my grinder :P) but I am having some difficulties finding a local supplier. After getting some mild financial trauma from paying shipping on all my grinder parts, I like to shop local whenever possible. Does anyone know of a good knife steel provider in the Raleigh/Durham/Clayton etc. North Carolina area? Also aside from local, does anyone know of any dealer of CRA 0.2 inch (or close above) thick 1095? Thanks in advance!

I don't know any local places, but Aldo (New Jersey Steel Baron) has good prices. 1084 would be better of you plan on heat treating yourself if you don't have a heat treat furnace. And .2" is really thick for a starting piece. Makes you work a lot more for no reason (and costs more). A 1/8" (.125") thick piece would be better.

I would check out Kelly Cupples, good prices, good selection of high carbon steel. Shoot him an email and ask for his current steel list.

Ive had very good experiences working with him, I really like CruforgeV and he carries several different sizes of it, I just bought some of the 1.2" round stock, which I'm very excited to play around with.
hope this helps,

AKS or NJSB are my top two choices, and I actually live about an hour from Admiral Steel (I work even closer).

For a small timer like myself, Alpha Knife supply is hard to beat. Super fast shipping and will sell me small pieces. I dont always need 3 feet of a particular steel. Ive bought 12" pieces from Alpha.
