Steel Types

Since I'm sort of new to collecting knives (though I've pretty much always had one in my pocket) I'm trying to sort out the different steel types. I'm having difficulty figuring out how the different types of steel rank in quality/cost.

Anyone have a "knife steel for dummies" link or info?

Here's a link to Ankerson's thread on edge retention of various knife steels. And a link to Spyderco's steel chart Hopefully this helps you out.
 


This is essentially all you need to get started. Listen to this guy. Also, Ankerson is another great guy to listen to. However, by steel types, did you mean carbon vs stainless vs tool steel or the difference between specific steels? The phrase steel types is slightly ambiguous. It could refer to more than one thing
 
It sure is! I refer back to it all the time.
Be careful. Soon you'll want to collect all the steels!
