Hey guys I was just wondering what the steel used in the pure komachi 2 is, it says that it is high carbon stainless but what does that really translate to? I was guessing 420HC or something along the lines of that but im not sure.

Thanks in advance,

According to knifecenter, it is 420J2. i was kind of hoping for sandvik, but they are so cheap that I can understand.

The PK2's are offshore production - no Sandvik is used for non-stateside production, IIRC.

Also, IIRC the steel was something other than 420J2, but I don't remember what it exactly was.

if it isn't 420 J2, then you may want to talk to knifecenter. it is pretty clear on the page, and i was a bit disgusted when i saw it.

edit: i just realized that is really sounded like a steel snob there. you guys are rubbing off on me

Yeah ive become quite a steel snob myself, im trying to gather the money to invest in a good knife set

What steel are you expecting from a China made knife at this price point?

I got one for me and one for my daughter. For light slicing they work like light sabers. If you keep the edge clean, it will last and last. The idea is, it's not just the steel, it is so thin. Bread, fruit, sandwich, vegetables. They're cheap, try one.

Thomas, I wasn't complaining, I was just a little bit surprised becuase i had never seen you guys make anything out of 420J2. Also, I have used them, and i think they are great. I would buy some, but I have ones that do just as well that i already have. to note, they came so sharp that my aunt preferred them after they had been dulled a bit becuase they would no longer cut on contact.

I know you weren't complaining, and I was just asking a question. :)

We have made knives out of J2 in the past (still do if I recall correctly). Believe the PK2's are made from 3CR.

For the price and quality, I don't really care what steel the blades are. They are a fantastic value. They're stainless and seem to hold an edge for ever. Bought our set in 2009 and the bread knife is still plenty sharp enough to take a slice out of my thumb.

The rest are still equally as sharp.

Liked them so much we bought 2 more sets for each of our daughters last year.
