I am trying to research a Buck 500 sterling silver folding knife. The case was beautifully engraved by the New England Silver company. The piece is vintage but never used still in the box. Can anyone help me with additional information or value? Thanks!

Welcome to the Buck forum. The good news is that you can find just about anything you ever wanted to know about a Buck knife here.

The bad news is that you aren't allowed to ask for values or what a knife is worth unless you are a Gold Member (paid) or higher according Blade Forums rules.

Thanks for the "FORUM LESSON" - I don't mean to break any rules. Are there Buck knife clubs in the So Cal area?

There's no "Buck Knife" club as such that I'm aware of in Ca. at all. There are alot of Buck Collector Club members all over the state though.

If you would post some photos of the knife we might be able to help a bit with everything but value.

I'm not personally aware of any Sterling Silver "500". There have been quite a few of the smaller models in the 500 series that have been done in Sterling. Is your's marked with 500 exactly or is it something like 525 for example?

Case is extremely similar - blade is marked BUCK 500 (followed by a backwards C) and U.S.A. If I put my knife in that position, there is an area on the reverse for an inscription - the opposite of the one in the photograph. The case is hallmarked and stamped 925. Closed the knife measures 4-3/8 inches, open about 7-1/2 inches. The exposed knife blade when open measures 3-1/4 inches. Weight is about 7 ounces. Do you know when these were made and how many?

At this point, I'm unfamiliar with the knife described. All I can say is that if if it's marked with a backwards C, that means that it was made in 1996.

Do you use PhotoBucket or any other online photo program similar to store your photos?

I'd love to post a photo but don't know how to do that on this site.

Easy. Find a photo hosting site like Photobucket (free), upload your photo there. Then use the site's function to create an
link and cut/paste that link here. Takes seconds to do.

elegant, That sounds like a Buck Classic model 510 but there were none made with a 3.25" blade. They came with a 3 1/8" blade and a handsome tooled leather sheath and according to some well respected collectors that model could have been around in 1996. The number '925' you say is on the sheath is a Buck Custom Shop number. Take a good photo of the knife and sheath then e-mail that to one of the guys
here and we'll post it for you. Make sure all the numbers are readable. Then we can get real close to what your knife is. DM

Here is the entire set of Buck Classic's with a sheath. Use the enlarge feature on your PC for a closer look. DM

David, I believe that what the OP is referring to as the "case" is actually the scales. The "hallmark" .925 is a mark indicating Sterling Silver. I've seen that mark on several silver objects including knives. If the knife in question is hallmarked 925, it's silver and therefore not one of the aluminum scaled classics.

"Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by mass of silver and 7.5% by mass of other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925."

Ok, thanks. I wondered What he was talking about as I've not heard that stated with that wording. DM

I apologize if I have miss worded anything in earlier posts - I know nothing about knives. I do however know a little about jewelry and metals - the handle portion of the knife is in fact sterling, is stamped 925 and manufactured by the New England Sterling Company (in 1996 possibly - as one person noted by the backwards C stamped on the blade). I have tried to include a photo thanks to instructions from a member. Hope the photo can be seen and will offer additional information about the knife. Thanks!

No apology needed... Folks here are continually coming up with cutlery terms here I've not heard used. Nor did I know Buck mfg. a run of Dukes in sterling. Still, I'd bet Jim Holbrook has one in his display. DM

The BCCI SO/LE list has a Sterling Buck Duke 500 issued in 1996. That is about all the info that is on the list, the one I posted looks like it's from the same issue. However, mine did not come in a box at all. Thanks for posting your box. Take a look at the side of your knife and you will see the silver is a thin overlay that has been glued to the steel knife scale (not solid silver).

This is the knife I have. Mine is new, in the original packaging and has not been engraved. Would love to know how many were made, are these rare or collectible? any info would be most appreciated.
