Just wanted to share my thoughts on a pair of true beasts that I purchased a few months back. The Stihl Pro Splitting Maul and the Stihl Universal Forestry Axe, both made in Germany by Ochsenkopf. They cost $99.00 each. Exact duplicate of the Ochsenkopf axes but actually CHEAPER buying them from Stihl, go figure.
For those who prefer wood handled axes and mauls, these are as good as it gets. They have a 5 piece mounting system with massive overstrike protector that will never loosen up. I destroyed both of my cheap synthetic handle axe and maul from Sears and Lowes and decided to buy these. They made short work of my wood splitting using the axe for small rounds and the maul for heavy duty work. Nothing survived unscathed. Enclosed are some photos. Old axe and maul are pictured also. Maul had broken handle and axe had epoxy separate from end of head. Both were Chinese junk:
Here is my Holz Hausen, 10 feet in diameter and 6 feet high. Oak, cherry and black locust.
