Stone Wash vs. Bead Blasted

MT offers the LUDT blade in a "Stone Wash" and "Bead Blasted" configurations. Will someone enlighten me as to the differences. There is no explanation on MT's web site. Is one more course than the other?

Bead blast will have a rougher finish, actual little "pits" in the steel. Will trap moisture and may develop rust spots more readily.

I'm not sure about MT's "stonewash" but generally the blade is tumbled in an abrasive that polishes the blade in every possible direction. Reduces glare. Is a smooth finish, just not polished all in one direction. Hides scratches better too.

The beadblast finish serves primarily as a no gloss finish for blades, so if that is an important issue for you I would go with BB. Also, on a BB finish the little divots in the metal capture and hold oil better than a satin finish.

The trade off is that they do rust easier. If you take good care of your knives it won't be a problem, I've never had a BB blade rust on me.

They will also develop scuffs in the finish much easier than Stone Wash or some other types of finish.

If you are not concerned about the possibility of the blade being reflective I would highly recommend the Stone Washed finish.

IMO Microtech does the best job with this finish, it just looks better than other companies.

Basically the blade is tumbled in ceramic media which scratches the metal and gives it almost a galvanized finish. It really is a great look.

If you are going for the covert look I would go for BB, if you are going for a nice attractive finish that will hold up under use go with Stone Wash.

Nothing to add to the technical descriptions above.

Unless you are a stealth operator, go with stonewash.

Another vote for the stonewash finish. I absolutly love it. It's gives a blade a very nice look and Microtech does it nicely.

I just picked up a stonewash Mt Medallion and I really like the finish. It does have kind of a smooth galvanized look to it.

I agree with the above posts. MT does an excellent job with the stone-wash finish. It's my personal favorite. It doesn't tend to show the average, everyday minor wear and tear that the BB finish will.

Thanks folks for the great explanations. Based on your comments, I'm going with the stonewash finish. I appreciated your remarks.
