I need some good rain gear. since i'm a welder and and synthetics go up like naplam, most of my clothing is cotton.
Can yall recommend me some good rain gear thats not gonna cost more than 100 bucks? ALso i just bought a nice soft shell type coat thing. Seems pretty warm. So i'm looking for something i can layer over if and stay dry.

check out frog toggs or dri ducks. they are made from tyvek and are cheap and so far they have worked great for me. i bought a XL suit at dick's for $15...i should have gone with a M, but at least with this i could wear south-pole exploration gear under the suit and still have extra room.

not bombproof, but light, waterproof and easily replaceable.

i recommend running them through the washer to soften them up, and then air dry them.

If you are looking for a waterproof, breathable backpacking type setup, look at one of the outdoor company's laminated two layer materials. Marmot PreCip, Mountain Hardwear Epic, TNF Venture, etc. Every outdoor company will have at least one pant and jacket in the material, except guys like Arc'Teryx that only deal in the high end stuff like Paclite and Pro Shell. The laminated materials work well and have been proven reliable by many, many people.

I'm a bit easily confused here...:o

You need raingear that you will be welding in?

I'd suggest a 12'x 12' piece of rhino hide and a few clips...

Welding + Rain = electric shock

That's true...I used to hate welding in major downpours, with soaking wet leather gloves! Hands buzzing away as you try to weld big blocks of steel together...how annoying!

Anyway when I used to weld in pouring rain, I used to just wear the PVC Viking stuff. Sure, you burn holes in it, but that's life. It was too wet to catch fire.

Although sometimes it was possible to just get away with the heavy canvas coats and a bunch of layers. By the end of the day, you're soaked through, but it takes a few hours and every night you dry it all out again.

Yeah, welding in the rain sucks, I wear some old grundens for that. But since i work on boats i tend to get wet a lot of the time even when its dry out, which aint all that often since i live in Seattle.

Anyway, No i wont be welding in the new rain gear i get. The soft shell i bought yesterday is Outdoor gear brand. I picked it over the Columbia Titanium since it wasnt made in china. Thanks for your opinions guy
Chris
