I'm considering the purchase of a streamlight Litebox rechargable and would like to have some feedback on this light. I have tested one for myself, and so far I like it very much. It seems to be a rugged and well built light. I'd like to know things like how easy is it to change bulbs, is it waterproof, etc. I'm looking to replace my old and venerable Duracell lantern (you know, the ones powered by the now hard-to-find rectangular lantern batteries with two terminals). The Litebox is much heavier than my Duracell, but I can get used to that. TIA for the info.

Dexter, I have one and I'm not that impressed with it. The beam on mine is terrible and it is one heavy dude. I guess it's how you're gonna use it. I wouldn't want to lug this one around deer camp.

I have not used one,but many fire dept.due so I would think it would have to stand up to h2o.I tried doing a search on www.firehouse.com on their forums but the function wasn't working for me.You may want to give it a try or just post your question there.

Big Tex and Lone Hunter - thanks guys for the fast response, I really appreciate it. I know this light is a heavy bastid - something like 7lbs. My main application for it is NOT to carry around (hence, my small army of SureFires ;) ) but rather as a work light in which I need to have an area (e.g. under the sink, inside the furnace room) illuminated while having both hands free. The problem I'd always had with that old Duracell lantern is that it's got a big head and a narrow base (essentially, it's the base of the battery) and it doesn't take much to knock it over. The Litebox is bottom heavy, which is what I want.

Thanks again!

I swear by them!!! As a firefighter they have gotten my ass out of jams more times than I can count. If you want to go with something smaller to compliment the LiteBox get a Streamlight Survivor. About 99.9% of firefighters use them as there personal carry light. Both will give you years of dependable use and they are very easy to service should you need to replace the lamps or batteries. And talk about tough...My lights have been charred, dropped, run over, mauled, and drenched..and they worked everytime. Get one, you won't regret it.

What do you guys recommend I do to improve the beam on my light? Another bulb/relfector? I can put up with the weight of the light but that beam is pretty bad.

Big Tex,

Streamlight offers replacement bulbs in both flood and spot light configurations. The lights come standard with the flood bulb. Switching to the spot bulb will probably rectify the problem. Here is a link to their site.

Don't quote me, but I think the LiteBox takes a standard
spotlight bulb (the kind that the patrol cars and some fire
apparatus have on them), and are usually available at NAPA,
or a Carquest dealer.

I also have used the LiteBox in my firefighting duties, as well as
Streamlight's SL-20x, and the old SL-15 plastic body.
We have gotten away from the Streamlights, mainly because when you needed one ,it wouldn't work because the rechargeable battey pack was fried.

Ken, thanx for the site. I have never been an advocate of rechargeable batteries but I'm giving my Surefire and this light another chance.

Ken - I thought Streamlight offers the Litebox in both flood and spot beams? Just order whichever one you want and that's it. I sure hope this is the case, because I need spot.

Code 3, what are you guys doing to those batteries?

I have a StreamLight SL-20 that I have been using on the job since I bought it in 1978. It has been dropped, bashed, run over, bounced off of more than a couple of skulls (and two car hoods), and generally trashed. It is on it's sixth battery pack, fourth reflector/bulb assembly, and second switch. But it still works like a champ.

The battery packs last me about three to four years before they begin losing the ability to hold a charge. Mind you, I cycle the battery (leave the light on for an hour or so, watching it run down to near exhaustion before switching it off; let it cool, then charge for 24 hours) four or five times a year, and don't leave it in the charger.

Are you using genuine StreamLight battery sticks?

Steve

Guys,

Thanks for all the help. I have a Litebox rechargable en route to me. Sounds like this is one tough light, which is exactly what I was looking for.

Cool, another new toy! :)
