Strength of a Tek-Lok?

Hello all,

I posted this on the Wilderness & Survival forum but figured I would try here with the sheath makers present.

I've done some searching on here without finding the answer I'm looking for. I know a lot of kydex makers use the Tek-Lok belt clips from Blade-Tech and I recently got ahold of one myself and it is definetely appealing. My question is how tough is it. It looks to me like all of the stress is actually born where the attachment screws go through the Tek-Lok and that area is counter bored to roughly half thickness. Is this a problem? Basically has anyone broken one during normal outdoor usage?

I'm very interested in using one on my field knife/psk kit which is a Cold Steel SRK with a pouch on the outside. I have ditched the flimsy nylon belt loop they supply and molded my own kydex belt loop that makes the knife ride a bit higher. The only problem is that it would be nice to be able to take the knife on and off without unthreading my belt. My main reason for this thinking is that my next modification to this knife is to attach a thin pouch on the back with a diamond shapener in it, or to permantly epoxy one to the back of the knife sheath and it would be nice to take the sheath off easily for touching up the blade.

Any opinions or comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Charles

Perhaps I have this in the wrong thread. Anyone who has used these in the field, please comment on what you think of them. Lots of sheaths use them so I was hoping someone would have an opinion.

Thanks,

Charles

I use Tek-Loks all the time in my knife/sheath making. I also wear one everyday too, and have for over a year. I've never had a customer complaint. I've never had one open on its own or break either, and I've snagged it quite a few times. I work in a power plant and there's plenty to get snagged on. I love the fact that you can take your knife off and put it on without disrobing.

Scottang,

Thanks for the quick reply. I figured they had to work as much as people were using them and that Blade-tech has always impressed me with what they use. Just didn't want to do a major modification to my SRK sheath without someone's opinion.

By the way, love your knives. Hope to be able to buy one of your edc's one of these days.

Later,

Charles

I'll be here when you're ready. BTW, I carried an SRK in Desert Storm. Good, strong, inexpensive knife. Still got it too! You'll only make it better with a Tek-Lok. I'd go for the large size.

I have used Tek-Loks on Blade Tech products for demanding everyday use on magazine pouches, knife sheaths and such. This has been over the last 7-8 years in a line of work where poorly made products will not stand up or continue to be used. In that time I have only one Tek Lok out of many come undone because of some extreme torque on it. I think they are a great product, and I use them on most of my sheaths and pouches that I make because they are so convenient and well made. Go for the large size. They come with a spacer that you can use and adjust for smaller belt sizes or take it out completely for wide belts.
