I tried the Hike Macro's on one short trip, but they were not effective in deeper snow or steep & rocky ground. I did run across a very economical option in the surplus market for full crampons without the full crampon price tag in the form of Swiss military crampons at Sportsman's Guide. Some others I would stay away from were the Italian and British surplus models which only have cleats on the center portion of the boot sole, not very effective.
I get what your saying about having some slip, only you know the trails your on and how you want to traverse them.
