No, I'm not trying to go play Stargate (although if someone has one in their backyard. . .), but I'm looking for some sunglasses with removable side shields.

Problem is, in the summer, the sand and reflections of the sun off the water can be brutal. Even with nice, dark glasses, enough comes into the sides to be a bother. Not sure if enough gets through to sunburn my retinas, but with all the problems I have already due to diabetes, I don't need any more that I could prevent.

Anybody run sunglasses like these?

Yes, I looked for the ones in the picture, but they were Bolles and they don't make them anymore. Reason I want one with side shields instead of wraparounds is I want to have prescription lenses made for them.

Julbo Sherpa Sunglasses (w/ Spectron 3 Lenses)
You don't have to climb mountains or ride down them to wear glacier glasses, but if you ever decide to do it, you'll be ready in these 100% UV protected glasses. With or without the removable side shields, the Sherpa looks great on anyone. Made by Julbo, an industry leader with over 130 years of experience in manufacturing the best in mountaineering eyewear.
Recommended for general use, skiing and snowboarding
Julbo Spectron 3 lenses
100% UV protection
13% visible light transmission
Polycarbonate w/color flash composition
Brown tint
Removable side shields
Moldable temples

I think under $50 , lot of great reviews ?

Thanks man.

Looks like their glacier glasses may be a better fit for what I want (of course, they are twice the price -- go figure).

They do and so does REI.

Question is, do I want to buy at Campmor for the lower price, or use my REI dividend on these and pay even less, or save the dividend.

Oh the calamity!

Julbo 'Legends' are also very good. i used them for all my ski touring last winter. They do not fog up when skinning up hill and protect the eyes in the wind. They have a removable, rubbarised side shield.

check out labsafety.com (lab safety supplies) - they have a pretty comprehensive section on safety glasses, some tinted, some polarized, and some with side shields from a vartiety of brands and price points.

Thanks, vik, I'll look around.

The Julbos won't work for me. I looked at their whole line and their temple-to-temple distance is only 5 3/8 to 5 1/2 inches. I need 6 inches.

you might also check out fishing supply catalogs - lots of fishermen use side shields to fight off the water glare.

You might want to consider Oakley, they are no cheap but have some of the best UV protection around, tough lenses and most of their models are like a glove to your eyes. The only down size is if you have long lashes like me, they touch the lenses from th inside.
The other brand I would recomment would be Parasite, they are now distributed in the US. http://www.parasite-eyewear.com/en-home.php
