Hello, I am new to the forum and would like you opinion on the Surefire Echo knife. I know its overpriced but that aside is it a good knife?

Try spyderco, kershaw, benchmade heck even gerber. Never had a surefire echo, but for $300, from a FLASHLIGHT company it cant be that great. plus all of surefire's stuff costs WAY more than its worth

Thank you for the reply. I own many Surefire flashlights and I think the quality is unmatched, I do agree that they are over priced but I use them daily for work and home and would trust nothing less. The Echo knife was designed by Steve Ryan so its not like it was from the mind of a flashlight designer. What I am looking for is a good fixed blade knife with a blade 4-5in for police use.

They are great products that give you durability, precision, and performance that is usually not found all in the same product. They may be a bit over priced, but when compared to othere manufacutres using the same materials it puts them in the same price range. They do not get the attention that they deserve.

Try one you'll like it!

They might seem overpriced, but I think that probably more how SureFire prices its stuff & you usually don't see anything of theirs nearly as much below retail as "most" production knife companies.

As to whether they're any good because they're a Flashlight company, keep in mind that regardless of price, they're considered some of the best equipment of their type for production flashlights (Probably more LE use SF than any other light). While some of the designs are by their design team (Whomever that is), I believe their earlier knives were/are designed by Steve Ryan, IIRC.

My surefire delta is a great great knife, easily on par quality wise with Reeve and Strider, and I am not kidding.

well, overpriced is purely subjective.

im happy to pay for what surefire offers in quality and durability. i do think the have fallen behind with regard to the led tech, but i wouldn't say their stuff is overpriced.

their knife prices are in line with similar designs by other makers using similar materials.

if the quality of their knives matches the quality of their lights (i have no reason to think otherwise), they are worth every penny.

After this post I took a second look at the Surefire brand of knives.
Looks like they use excellent materials in their knives. I am just
not really into the wrench portions, and the seat belt cutters or
really any type of gadget or gizmo integrated onto that type of
knife. A multitool? sure. But wrenches and all of that on my fixed
blade, just not for me.

The echo is a quality knife out of cpm-3v steel. 3v is a premium steel that will out-preform alot of steels. The echo is double ground but is sharpened on one side like a chisel. It is a full fledged combat knife, designed by steve ryan and produced by surefire to their high standards. Its a no nonsense cutter. I know $300 seems high for a production knife like that but i don't think you will be unhappy with it, but that is just my opinion.

+1 on what Mark said.

I've used my Surefire L1 almost everynight since I got it over a year ago. If it was gone now I feel I've already got my money out of it, but I'm pretty sure it will last for many, many more years.

$300 isn't overpriced for a production fixed blade in 3V with Surefire's fit-and-finish.

I just wish it didn't have those serrations and chisel grind. :(

The knife is nice, but look at a RC-4/RC-5/RC-6 for similar but lower cost alternatives.

That being said, Surefire's F&F, quality, and durability is second to very few. They've fallen a bit behind in LED technology, but make up for it with kick ass products that are tough as nails and very reliable.

When looking at other FB in 3V that seems to be a good starting price point for a 4-5" knife. Just loose the serrations.

Its double ground, it just has a chisel secondary bevel.

I also wish they could be ordered without the serrations.

I've seen and played with the Surefire knives and have to say their F&F is just as good as their lights. Titanium and S30V, on their folders and CMP3-V and Micarta on the fixed blades, what more can you ask for.

As for them falling behind on LED's, check out the new LX2. The 200 Lumen Surefire LED that we have all been waiting for is finally here. I haven't seen it yet but I'm sure it will blow most the other lights out right now out of the water.

I have handled that light. Pretty cool!

They've fallen a bit behind in the last couple of years but they are making a comeback. :)

I've handled the fixed blade Surefire in question and it is an ok knife. Good fit and finish. But do yourself a favor and look on the Makers section of this forum and check out what some of our brothers are hand making. I believe that you will find someone who will make your knife to your specs for less than the Surefire knife. I just had a knife made by WalterDavis, to my specs, and his good judgement/expertise, for less than a production knife made by some elf or whatever. Or you might find a knife already being made by one of these "Makers" that will fit the bill. I would rather deal with a man than a company if the man can produce a superior product. And these gents can. My 2 cents. Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

I have one. I Love it. It's really reminds me of The med. Strider blades. Except the sheath is kind of "production'' plastic. Not perfectly molded kydex. But it's still a Wonderful knife. But since you're willing to spend that much. Take a look at Striders in the same price/size range and Dozier too. Actually you might be able to get a Med. Busse for that price. Really a lot of good knives for that price. But all in all, it's as good quality as any of the lights. and Designed by Ryan. So you won't be making a bad decision. But check out some of Striders offerings and Dozier, Busse and others before you Make a Decision. You might find something you like a little better.
