I am interested in reading a book on general wilderness survival. Is this one any good or are there better ones? Thanks!

An extremely useful book for the camper, fisherman, or hunter to keep in their supplies. One of the best books on the survival subject, well rounded and very detailed. You may even want to keep a copy in the trunk of your car with your roadside tools, since you never know when you might need some help making a fire or finding water.

Reproduction of FM 21-76 Dept. of ARMY Field Manual October 1970.

Written in very accessible easy to understand language, the material in this book includes information:

Navigation and Compass Use
Health and Hygiene In The Outdoors To Prevent Sickness
First Aid
Hazards In The Wild To Look Out For
Foods & Where To Find Them
How To Fish Different Ways To Catch Them With Local Materials
Trapping Mammals, Rodents, Reptiles, Insects & How To Dress & Prepare These Foods
Vital Information On The Many Methods Of Fire Making
How To Find The Most Important Element You Need To Survive - Water
and much, much more

Two I liked a lot are Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski, and Survive! by Les Stroud. (I think that was what it was called.)

Les wrote one of the best thought out survival books you can find. I've got quite a few, including my old issued field manuals from my time in the army and none of them are as well written and clear-in-concepts as Survive, by Les Stroud

Great. I'll look into Les Stroud's book.

I am still curious what everyone thinks of the Army Manual.

Strongly suggest you get Cody Lundin's, 98.6 degrees ~ The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive. I believe this is best book for laying a foundation of survival.

Then supplement with one of the others fore mentioned OR I like the Naked Into The Wilderness books by the McPhersons. Or Buschcraft by Kochanski. They would supplement 98.6 quite well.

Buy a Collins gem version of John Wiseman's SAS Survival Guide. It contains nearly 400 pages of great info, and is only slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes. I am a certified Army Artic Warfare & Survival Instructor. I own dozens of survival books, and this book with it's combination of info and size, is a daily companion carried in my pack.

Lots of good suggestions. I also like Larry Dean Olsen's survival book.

DancesWithKnives

Outdoor survival skills by Larry Dean Olsen

How to stay alive in the woods by Bradford Angier

But 21-76 is pretty good

Carl-

Lundins 98.6 is a good one.
Bushcraft by Mors is a "must have" IMO
Kepharts Camping and Woodcraft is also a great read....

The military survival manual you posted is a good read, and for the price, I say its worth owning a copy....

The ol stand by is the SAS survival handbook by John "lofty" Wiseman. It was one of my firsts, and a great text to have on hand.

I recommend Tom Brown's books.

But it can't hurt to read more than one, especially about edible/medicinal plants.

There is an updated 2002 copy of the survival TO, FM 3-05-70. Picked up a copy of mine last time overseas. The list above by TF is great, I own a few dozen of them listed... I will add these to that list, however some are for "TEOTWAWKI" survival not the Im lost and stuck survival.

How to survive the end of the world as we know it- James Wesley Rawles... Seriously for the $9 it is going for on Amazon you can not go wrong just ordering it with your next order.

Surviving the economic collapse- Fernando "Ferfal" Aguirre- He lived thru the Argentina economic collapse and has some GREAT first hand experience he wrote in the book. He is also a ARFcom member that answers and assists other with many questions.

The SAS survival guide- yes it is listed above, but they also make a "gem collins" version which is a condensed pocket version. I gave all my family and extended family members one last year for Christmas along with some MREs, other info, MH packets, and a few other things.

No such thing as doomsday- Phillip Hoag..... HARD to find for a decent price in a decent condition. I own 2 written copies of it, the first cost about $100, but is PERFECT, the 2nd I accidentally stumbled across on ebay for $10, some guy had highlighted several passages and wrote notes in the margins, but for that price, I can lend it out to friends to get them reading it. It IS the source for bunker style shelters.

Archive search (or even better if in SLC Utah, attend her seminars/ classes at the city county building on State and 4th'ish) "Sharon Packer- Utah Shelter Systems" the current site has gone mainstream and gives you crap, but the old site... a wealth of info... its like "HOW" walton feed used to be.... even archive search that as well.

The thing about survival is you have to alter it to "your" budget, and most importantly scenario... which one can never plan for everything, but it should be suitable to assist one with a large variety of issues that could stem from a single source issue.
