Survival movie or documentary

The Endurance
A documentary about the survival of some explorers.
They ate their dogs
They broke their ship for fire wood
Some went insane
Greatest survival story in my opinion of all time.

I don't remember the name of it. It was about a guy that retired early and lived in Alaska in a cabin he made himself and survived for like 30 years there. Finally when he got too old for the harsh winters he came back into civilization and went to a nursing home I believe.

He made his own bowl and spoon out of wood, his log cabin, etc.

Neat show, sorry I don't recall the name right now.

Alone in the Wilderness, Dick Proenneke as mentiond by kuruptd. He was 50 some years old when he started to build his cabin.

Also if you can find a copy "A Cry in the Wild" the book Hatchet made into a movie.

The Robert Conrad movie of the ship wreck stranding himself, son, and two daughters in Alaska. Mears discusses this story in one of his Artic series. My Side of the Mountain, The Hatchet, Escape from Wildcat Canyon, Alive all have their good points. There was an old movie with Sally Strothers in which she and a pilot were stranded in the northern wilderness for several weeks. Had a lot of religion in it, but I would like to see it again. I believe it was based on a true event. Dick Proeneke's documentaries are among the best. The Canadian reality series Pioneer Quest is really good. Unfortunately not available on VHS or DVD. The movie/docudrama starring Charles Martin Smith living in the wilderness to study wolves is great entertainment. Once again, based on true events.

Talk about wolves...
The movie called Never Cry Wolf is a good one, as well (original book by Farley Mowat (same title).

I believe that's the one I'm thinking of. I thought it was great that he had all those cases of beer or liquor.

If you can find a copy, "The Last Trapper" is a great movie about a guy trapping in Alaska. It's shot as a documentary with a few dramatic scenes added, sounds weird bt it was very good.

Oh, I think he mixed up some "moonshine" from the pure alcohol he was supposed to use for animal organ preservation... :D

Hey, I'm Alive! is the name of the movie.

Other good ones:

I shouldn't be alive (TV series)
Testament
Trigger effect
The day after
Panic in year zero

No question for me that documentaries based real, true life events experiences are more dramatic than a Hollywood movie based on events.

This is probably my favorite of all time:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/shackleton

It was a joint production of PBS and A&E and the actually retraced the steps of the doomed Captain Shackelton and his crew. The hardship those men faced was no less than incredible.

The story "Survive the Savage Sea" concerning the tale of the Robertson Family adrift in the pacific.

The documentaries and book are fantastic; the 1992 made for TV movie is lame.

After their 43-foot schooner was stove in by a pod of killer whales, the six members of the Robertson family spent 37 days adrift in the Pacific. With no maps, compass, or navigational instruments, and rations for only three days, they used every survival technique they could as they battled 20-foot waves, marauding sharks, thirst, starvation, and exhaustion.
