Survival neck knife

Recently I've started converting my Newt Livesay "Woo" neck knife into a survival knife by making a few additions. My thinking is that with the Woo around my neck and the items attached to it I would be assured of having the basic means to survive in the wilds carried in a manner very hard to lose.

I slipped a sleeve of bicycle inner tube over the sheath. Under this I have a small LED flashlight, mini-bic lighter, button compass, two birthday candles (20 min burn time each), two foil packets of potassium permanganate, small acrylic signal mirror, and a heavy duty needle. The cord wrapped handle has an extral layer of #4 waxed polyester thread (saddle and holster thread).

Since the total package is thicker than the original it does not conceal well anymore but it does carry nicely. I have attached a metal whistle to the top as "shirt camo". If anyone spots the cord around my neck they will see the whistle print and assume I have a whistle around my neck under the shirt, simple.

I plan to use this rig in a nearby national park where open carry of sheath knives is frowned upon.

Has anyone ever done this with a neck knife and if so what did you include in the kit? I actually have about 1 cubic inch of space left. Mac

This is very interesting. I like the innovations - and how you camo it with the whistle. Does it feel heavy around your neck? :)

Pict - you might be able to fit some fishing hooks and a good amount of line in the extra space. And some water purification tablets. Just some suggestions. :)

K,

True the Woo isn´t the first choice for a woods blade. I have a G-45 and an NRGS on order at the moment. The Woo is the only neck knife I have currently so I decided to test the concept.

Bhodisatva,

The unmodified knife is very thin in it´s kydex sheath, about .25 inches. With the gear under the rubber sleeve it is about .5 inch thick. In other words it prints against a T-shirt as a "somthing not identifiable". This may cause people to ask, "What´s that under your shirt?"

I put the whistle on top of the sheath so it lays sideways. This leaves a distinct whistle impression on the T-shirt at the place where the cord would hang it. Anyone looking sees the cord, sees the whistle and they´ll just assume that I have a whistle around my neck.

The knife does not feel heavy. I replaced the stainless ball chain with a double loop of paracord. I figured the paracord would be a better resource than the ball chain. The double loop gives me almost a meter of cord and spreads out the weight better.

BTW I got this idea from a photo on a survival board that showed how to make a neck pouch for a PSK out of bike innertube. A little light went off in my head that said "survival neck knife". Mac

Pict-

A very interesting idea: can you post a photo of your neck rig? also, would it be possible to post the link to the susvival site that you mentioned? Thanks!

Maury,

Unfortunately I don't have a link to that page. I hit it one day surfing and didn't bookmark it. The neck pouch was pretty simple consisting of a bike innertube to which the guy had installed small brass grommets to keep the bottom end closed and provide a way to hang it/ close it at the top. I have no way to install the grommets but I do stretch innertube over just about all my knives, hence the idea.

I have been planning to take some digital photos of my knives set up this way but I have been extremely busy lately. Maybe later today. Mac

OK I have two shots of the Woo survival kit but i can't figure out how to post them. Can somebody talk me through this? Mac

pict,

Hey, how ya doing? I was reading one of your last posts about the bike-tube pouch and it sounded alot like a kit I saw used as an entry in the Hoods Woods BK7 Survival Kit Contest.

I don't know if this is the same one, but it sounded very similar. Let me know if it is.

I hope this helped?

sere_usaf,

I'm pretty sure that was the one. If I can figure out how to post the photos you'll see the connection. Thanks for the link. Mac
