I was just thinking today...I really like hot sauce, all kinds, from mild and tasty to OMG hot...I was wondering if any of you have a small bottle in your bags? (I know that some of them need to be refrigerated afetr opening in the case of say a tomatoe based hot sauce) I have been reading a book on edible wilds, like cat tails, and different plants, and roots, and then I know grubs, and other bugs can be good too, amongst many other things...but just cause its edible that doesn't mean it will taste good, lol...I figure I could put hot sauce on pretty mcuh anything and like it...but I was wondering, would eating hot sauce have negative effects in an emergency situation...? Like for example, would your body lose water via saliva? I know when you eat anythgin your body uses water for digestion...does it take more energy when eating hot sauce (or any spicey food) than any other food? And if so is it significant? Just wondering...I figure a really hot sauce could make all those grubs taste like soft jerk chicken, lol...just something strange I was thinking about today...

I don't carry any but those Tabasco mini bottles the military issues with MRE might be something to take. Personally, after trying all sorts of different hot sauces, I always come back to Tabasco. I think it might improve the taste of grubs, etc. ;)

One advantage of hot sauce is that it may kill some bacteria in the food...for example when eating raw oysters it is well known that if you put hot sauce on them, your chances of getting sick are lessened.

Me too, and I think I've figured out why: it's the consistency. I don't mean the texture or thickness, but the fact that after all these years, it always tastes the same. It's never slightly more sour, or too salty, or not hot enough. You know going in exactly how much to add to your food, and you never need to adjust.

I am a fan of hot sauces as well. For general "flavor" sauces with a bit of kick I like Green Tabasco, and Choloula(sic) which I can't bear to eat eggs without! For all other purposes, or to overcome uh, shall we say less then perfect food prep, I'll take traditional Tabasco.

My old man used to say: "If you put enough Tabasco on it you can eat anything."
Words to live by! :D

Running out of hot sauce is a survival situation. I think I would starve to death without it.

In my case hot sauce would have a positive effect on my morale that would outweigh any gastro-intestinal worries.

Tabasco, when I drink that stuff I think, "Wow, I could have had a V-8!" I like sauce with a kick to it but not that insane stuff where they just go for heat with no flavor.

I make my own with pimenta malagueta (like little firecrackers) and extra virgin olive oil, its sublime. Mac

i usually bring a small bottle of tobasco habenero with me when im back packing. it makes everything taste better.

I knew there would be alot of you guys lovin' the hot sauce, lol...I too like a good balance between heat and flavor, when I try a new hot sauze and its just way to hot, I will just add a drop or 2 to other sauces that are flavorfull but mild...I experiment will all kinds...but tobasco is always a favorite, I really like their newer chipotle version, but original is just as good if thats all I got...

p.s. I LOVE buffalo/hot wing sauce...I put it on everything, lol, and some buffalo sauce mixed with ranch (even beter is bacon ranch) dressing is my favorite dipping sauce for chicken (fried chicken strips or similar) Man.........Now Im hungry, lol...

Every time I go to Taco Bell, I swipe a handful of Fire Sauce packets for my kit.

Hot sauce can make virtually any food palatable.

yes sir, chipoltle tabasco is my favorite....carry it everywhere....as a matter of fact i have a bottle right next to me...just had grits and basco

Rich, the Fire sauce isn't half bad. I never seem to use it other than on their bean burritos though.

I love the habanero sauces. For camping though I usually bring a pepper shaker with cayenne pepper in it.

From a survival point of view, I hear that hot sauce or anything spicy can make your metabolism increase slightly. I too love to carry the one from MRE's makes everything taste great. I wonder if you can use it as a disinfectant? Though, it might hurt like H*$L.

Interesting...for disinfectant I carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer, which can also be used for fire starting...even catches easily from a fire steel...only problem is the flame is not that visible during the day...

Langston... I just discovered the chipotle one only a couple months back and love its smoky flavor. It'll be tough deciding between the two now. My wife's pot roast is great, but with the chipotle flavor, it was ever better.

I would't recommend it. Basically, it's just causing pain to your nociceptors in your skin but that's it. Once the vinegar aerates out, you're left with a food additive on an open wound, which will be very receptive to bacteria. It has no disinfecting properties at all.

Medically, though, it can be great to alleviate a bad case of congestion! Anything that loosens up the sinuses can be great in damp or cold weather.

I also carry a double shaker with Cayenne pepper in one side and salt in the other....the Cayenne helps to stop bleeding !!!!

I can only think of two things that may be bad about the hot sauce. One would be the salt content and the amount of water required to conterbalance it. The other consideration is would the hot sauce contribute to diarrhea? The problem with diarrhea is that it causes body to lose lots of water.

2 very good points, and we all know how important water is in an emergency...So I guess that answers it then, for emergencies I will just have to suck it up and eat my bugs, roots, and grubs dry, lol, but for fun camping, Ill stick to hot sauce...Thanks for everyones imput!

There's a digestive system 'cleansing' recipe that uses apple cider vinegar and molasses to deliver as much cayenne(active ingredient, apparently) as you can stand. I haven't tried it, but my boss' wife swears by it for any gastric ailments. I guess it's like pouring drano down a plugged sink....
