Do you even try stick, bro?

^^^WTF #11, a flute?

Here's my best attempt to date. I didn't do every cut from the diagrams. I know I've seen other try sticks around here, but I'd love to see what you've done or what you can do!

From a slightly different angle.

Hey, I will try that. Always wanted to, but never saw a diagram of the various cuts and notches.... That looks like a good skill building exercise for around the campfire.

Awesome!
It's crazy how nimble that 5 is right?!!
The flute is only for people that want to dance around in the forest while wearing really tight tights.

This was fairly fresh citrus wood so it wasn't to hard to work with.

It's a lot of fun! Post some pics when you give it a try.

I love using my 5 so much. Nimble and able to take a beating. I'm really excited about experiencing the 4.7 and new 4.1.

Wow, I get the flute concept now. I was actually wearing tights when I was making this stick, I just didn't get to dancing. Next time!

And dude, you have some serious skills. Please tell me how you got that nice little spoon looking so good. A spoon is next on my list of things to do with my 5.

What type of wood do you like using best? Soft or hard? Fresh or old?

For the spoon I used the tip of the 4.1 and did a V-grove then slowly shaped it. It's honestly a pain in the butt.
Wood wise I chose this citrus because it's pretty flexible and it dried without having any cracks from the eye leading out. I would definitely suggest a medium density wood only because I'm new at this. Soft wood can break and that's just asking for an accident and hardwood is just hard. I'm to damn lazy for that!

Thanks for posting this! This is so fun and when I get my 4.1 I am gonna try it. Meanwhile I could still try doing one using the Esee 3 which I just purchased last night but it would not be posted here.

Thanks for the advice. I need to get working on that technique. I meant to say that YOUR try stick pic inspired me to work on my own and invite others to get in on it.

pj, levs don't tell anyone but I also tried a stick with my bk16 to compare to my 5. Go get some practice while you wait for your order!

Haha I can't claim credit for them. I got the idea from Sagewood Gears Instagram page a while back. I believe he was inspired by Mors Kochanski if I'm not mistaken. He is a legend in the bushcrafter community.

Wow. I thought I was doing good when I whacked a limb off the olive tree in my backyard. You guys are awesome.

I get it, Standard. I meant to say seeing your try stick made me want to do it myself and inspired this thread!

Oh ok I read it wrong. I didn't want to take credit but I'm glad it helped inspire some people. I still need to get off my butt and make some with 3.5 and 6! I've barely even used these things.

I'll take that 3.5 if you need someone that'll put it to use.

I would really wanna see a video of how you carve those sticks. I am totally a noob and have no idea how it is done, especially with those rounded corners.

Haha I plan on dulling it up soon! I can't believe you missed out on the two that were for sale today!

stupid question from a carving noob: do you use green wood or dried wood?
Greener is definitely easier. The few that I did were only a few days old so they were pretty fresh.

It takes a bit of patience at first. Every notch takes multiple cuts but you will learn what part of the knife works best for each cut. My best advice is to just go for it! I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

*Safety wise, please remember to cut away from your self and others and keep your legs away from harm also. These damn things cut!!!

Thanks for the advice. I don't have my GSO yet and I am hoping I will get the 5.1 soon to try it out.
